Wells Fargo Arena to host battle for Pac-10 positioning, state bragging rights

It seems that every time Arizona plays in Wells Fargo Arena, it turns out to be another home game, just 100 miles up I-10.

Throughout the stadium, many fans can be heard screaming "U of A" or "ASU Sucks." That changed a bit last season, as the Sun Devils took back home-court advantage with an impressive victory. [Read article]

The revenge tour for the women's basketball team kicks off this Saturday when it faces in-state rival Arizona State at 1 p.m. at McKale center.

Of the Wildcats' three remaining games, two are against teams that beat Arizona (17-7, 10-5) during the first half of the Pacific 10 Conference season.

ASU topped Arizona 73-58 when the two teams last met in Tempe almost a month ago. The Sun Devils (14-10, 6-9) used a 21-6 run to open the game and cruised to a win over the then 19th-ranked Wildcats. [Read article]

photo Softball looks to prove ÎWorth' as tournament host

For nearly three weeks, the Arizona softball team has been practically unstoppable.

While the defense has been shutting down teams by dominating on the mound, the Wildcat offense has proved to be too strong for their opponents.

That was evident when Arizona dropped Arkansas, 9-1, last weekend after seeing the mercy rule implemented.

Despite being young on the mound ÷ UA's only concern prior to the start of the season ÷ play hasn't been hampered so far. [Read article]

Arizona is the surprise host of its own impromptu mini-tournament this weekend.

Originally, UA was set to play in Surprise at the new Texas Rangers spring training facility, but because of the tournament's cancellation, the Wildcats invited their opponents to the Southwest for four days.

"It'll be good getting into a rhythm playing these games," left-fielder Trevor Crowe said. "It's fun playing all the time; I would play seven games in seven days if I could." [Read article]

Track team heads to post-season meet

Wildcat track and field begin their championship portion of the season this weekend when Arizona heads north to Boise, Idaho, to challenge the best the region has to offer at the indoor Mountain Pacific Conference Championship.

Wrapping up a successful indoor regular season, Arizona returns to Boise with nearly a full squad ready to fight for post-season accolades. This weekend, the 18th-ranked Wildcat women face tough competition from nationally ranked schools such as No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Stanford and No. 23 Washington State. No. 6 Stanford's men will be the only ranked men's squad competing in the Friday and Saturday meets. [Read article]

Tennis takes on Pac-10's best

After being upset last weekend by Oregon on its home court, the Arizona women's tennis team dug itself an early hole in the Pacific 10 Conference race.

With No. 3 Southern California and No. 9 UCLA heading to Tucson this weekend, the No. 24 Wildcats still have a chance to move right back to the top of the conference.

At minimum, a split is more than likely needed for UA (2-1 overall, 0-1 Pac-10 Conference) to stay in the top 25. [Read article]

photo Tough scheduling puts Gymcats at No. 1 UCLA

Scheduling hasn't been a friend to the UA gymnastics team this year.

A week after taking on one of the nation's most successful programs in Utah, the Gymcats take on this year's top-ranked team in UCLA (9-1-1, 4-1-1) on Sunday in Pauley Pavilion.

Even though wins and losses don't matter toward a team's final ranking, UA head coach Bill Ryden is looking for a good score even if it comes in a loss to the Bruins. [Read article]

UCLA hoops squeeks by Cal in overtime

Dijon Thompson rebounded his own missed shot and scored with 6 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UCLA over No. 18 California 76-75 last night, snapping the Bruins' 10-game Pac-10 losing streak.

After Cal's Amit Tamir missed, the Bruins grabbed the rebound as time ran out. Students mobbed the court in celebration of the Bruins ending an eight-game losing streak at Pauley Pavilion, where they played their 600th game in the building's history. [Read article]
