For nearly three weeks, the Arizona softball team has been practically unstoppable.
While the defense has been shutting down teams by dominating on the mound, the Wildcat offense has proved to be too strong for their opponents.
That was evident when Arizona dropped Arkansas, 9-1, last weekend after seeing the mercy rule implemented.
Despite being young on the mound ÷ UA's only concern prior to the start of the season ÷ play hasn't been hampered so far.
The Wildcats' young talent will be tested again this weekend when they play host to the Worth Wildcat Invitational.
No. 2 Arizona (13-1) plays host to visiting: Drake (5-1) and Oklahoma State (12-5) on Friday and Virginia (14-3) and Western Michigan (0-0) on Saturday. The tournament concludes with New Mexico (1-4) on Sunday.
The wins are piling up, but so are the errors; something that could haunt Arizona in its quest for the national title.
"We're a young team and if we played like that in May, it would be a problem," UA volunteer assistant coach Jennie Finch said. "But it's February and there's still time. That wasn't Wildcat softball."
Arizona jumped to an impressive 10-1 start on the road after the Louisville Sluggert and the Fiesta Bowl Tournament at home.
Their only loss was a 2-1 shortcoming against Texas.
As they opened their season at home last weekend where they are 313-18 all-time, the Wildcats swept all three games they played.
"Playing at our own field has a level of comfort and hopefully we'll feel it more this weekend," UA pitcher Wendy Allen said. "Coach has a lot planned for defense and we need good at-bats."
Freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell has earned her place among the top of the UA
pitching rotation after finishing the weekend with two wins.
Hollowell pitched her second no-hitter of the season against Minnesota in a 6-0 victory.
Overall, the UA freshman pitcher has a 0.25 ERA and a record of 7-1. She's struck out 92 batters in 55 innings while recording five shutouts for the Wildcats.
Arizona kicks off the tournament today against Drake at 3 p.m., followed by Oklahoma State at 5 p.m.
