Architecture students lead expensive lives.

John Kerbaugh estimates he spent $1,500 last semester on materials for class projects. Between building materials, tools and pens, he says the program's costs add up fast ÷ and that's before he factors in the required laptop computer.

"Every project is about $100," said Kerbaugh, whose desk in the architecture studio contains a tackle box full of tools and building materials, all of which he paid for. [Read article]

photo Activists gather in library for 24-7 anti-war demonstration

Students and local activists spent a second night in three fourth-floor meeting rooms in the UA Main Library last night in protest of the war with Iraq.

Since 8 a.m. Monday, the protesters have occupied the rooms, using them as a 24-hour "information centers" for the war on Iraq. The group has no name, but is composed of members from local activist groups such as the Alliance for Peace and Justice in the Middle East (APJME), UA Young Socialists and Students Against Sweatshops. photo Native American fraternity first in the Western U.S.

Josh Lucio was shocked to hear his name announced as fraternity President of the Year at the Order of Omega greek awards ceremony earlier this month.

Josh serves as the president of Beta Sigma Epsilon, a group of five men who have formed the first Native American fraternity in the Western United States.

Founded at UA in January 2000, Beta Sigma Epsilon did not receive official university recognition until a year later. [Read article]

Honored professor a "listening ear"

When Professor John A. Garcia served as political science department head, he left his office door open all the time.

During his 31 years at UA Garcia has made being approachable and accessible to students a priority.

"Some students who don't take my classes come and see me," he said. "So I am kind of a listening ear."

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) presented Garcia with the LULAC National Presidential Award for Outstanding Educators in America on Thursday at its 14th Annual Educators Banquet. [Read article]

Spirited UA student killed in car crash

On Saturday, the Arizona cheerleading squad celebrated the UA men's basketball team's thrilling double overtime victory. Just a day later, however, the excitement turned to shock, and then sadness, as the squad members learned of the death of a friend and teammate that afternoon.

Physical education sophomore Marissa Kinney, 20, was traveling westbound on Route 74 just outside Peoria, with her sister Allison, 18, when an eastbound vehicle blew a tire, according to Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Steve Volden. He said the car then crossed into Kinney's lane and collided with her 1989 Toyota before hitting another car. [Read article]
