Pac-10's best next for men's tennis

The Arizona men's tennis team will put its three-match win streak on the line this weekend against Pac-10 powerhouses Stanford and California.

Coming off of a season-saving upset of No. 9 Washington on Saturday, Arizona will hit the road for the final time this regular season to take on the No. 3 Golden Bears and No. 7 Cardinal. Victories over Oregon and UW this past weekend not only put UA at .500 for the year (8-8, 2-2), but also provide the No. 33 Wildcats with a confidence boost heading into the crucial weekend series.

"We haven't won there in a long time," head coach Bill Wright said.

Wright feels his squad matches up well against the two top-10 squads and stands a fair chance at defeating one of the Bay area schools this Friday and Saturday.

"We can beat them," Wright said. "Stanford is not the dominating team they used to be."

The Cardinal comes into Saturday's match 15-3, 2-0 and winners of 12 of its past 13 matches, including an upset of conference rival No. 3 California on Tuesday.

Last time out for the Wildcats in Tucson, Stanford dropped Arizona by a score of 6-1, winning the 1,000th match in school history. The lone win for the Wildcats that day was by number one singles player Whi Kim, who defeated the Cardinal's Scott Lipsky.

Kim, who has been hindered by an abdominal strain the past two weeks, said that while he is not fully recovered, he is ready to take on the Cardinal and Golden Bears' best.

"I think we can beat them," the junior Kim said of Arizona's second shot at the Bay area schools.

California is off to the school's best start since 1989, when the Golden Bears jumped out to an identical record of16-3.

Wright is looking for his Wildcats to add on to their recent strong play. A victory for Arizona over Stanford or Cal would almost assure the Wildcats a high seed in the 64-school postseason national tournament.

"I think making the playoffs this year is a great motivator for our guys," Wright said of his young Wildcat squad that missed out on the playoffs last season.

Arizona will return home the following weekend to close out the regular season by taking on in-state rival Arizona State. The Pac-10 championships will commence the following Thursday.
