Football spring game set for tomorrow

By Charles Renning

Friday April 11, 2003

For the second time in as many weeks, the Arizona football team will hold a scrimmage as part of its spring practices.

The Wildcats will play in their annual Red-Blue scrimmage tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Arizona Stadium. More than the 75 or so spectators who attended last weekend's scrimmage are expected at tomorrow's event.

The Wildcats usually play the Red-Blue scrimmage on their final practice of the spring, but because the schedule got pushed back, they will hold it midway through their 15 allotted practices.

Head coach John Mackovic said that the Red-Blue scrimmage will be very similar to last weekend's work-out. It will have about the same amount of plays and be in a controlled setting.

"We really haven't been able to put all of our units together to do separate teams yet, so it will be more of a controlled scrimmage," said Mackovic.

The players are looking forward to working out in front of crowds again.

"It's going to be fun to get out there with some fans out there," said senior receiver Andre Thurman. "It will put us in a state of mind for something close to a game."

Arizona finished its eighth practice last night and is more than halfway to the end of its spring workouts. The players will have today off, play in the scrimmage on Saturday and get Sunday off before returning to regular drills on Monday.

Red zone a priority

The Wildcats used the final practice last night before tomorrow's scrimmage to work on red zone scoring. The team played 11 on 11 for the final 30 minutes of practice with all plays coming from with in the 30 yard line.

"We were focusing on our scoring zone offense and defense," said Mackovic. "We had a good team period."

Focus on QB battle

Again the focus at the end of practice turned to the quarterback battle between sophomore Nic Costa and freshman Ryan O'Hara.

Both have split time behind the center all through spring practice, and Mackovic thinks it will stay that way for a while.

"Our quarterbacks are learning," he said. "They have made a few mistakes, but you have to (learn)."

Mackovic mentioned that he would like to have a starter named as soon as possible, but admitted it won't be anytime too soon.

"We will make a decision as soon as possible," he said, "which will probably be the week of the first game."
