Fixing Park/Speedway needs more thought

As a contributor to Devin Simmons' interesting front page article on the intersection of Park and Speedway (April 9 Wildcat), I must take exception to your unequivocal call for left-turn arrows from Speedway to Park in the April 15 editorial. While the left-turn arrows may be warranted, there are a number of factors that traffic engineers need to consider when making this change: signal timing, accident experience, types of accidents, delay to all traffic movements, pedestrian movements, the lane drop on Speedway west of the intersection and so on. I assure you, as I did with Mr. Simmons, that determining the signal timing requirements at this intersection is complicated. [Read article]

Guest Commentary: Public, not soldiers, must decide necessity of war

Editor's Note: Todd Arena, a philosophy junior, and Jonathan Hustad, a December 2002 media arts graduate, were called up for duty in Operation Enduring Freedom last fall. They are now stationed at United States Army Base at Ft. Sill, Okla., as members of the U.S. Army Reserve.

We do not believe that supporting the war is analogous to supporting soldiers. It is possible to support soldiers without supporting the war, to have faith in an administration while criticizing its policies and, most assuredly, to support the government while questioning the current administration. photo Close Park Avenue to motorists

Last December, a friend of mine, Andria Ligas, was killed biking along North Euclid Avenue just north of the university. A 19-year-old senior, Andria maintained a 4.0 while working three jobs, competing in (and winning) near-weekly triathlons, serving as co-president of the campus climbing club and as an officer in several other organizations, and creating artwork to rival that of many studio art majors.
