Immigrant students seek lower tuition

Law would allow immigrants to pay in-state college tuition

This week, groups in Tucson and across the nation held vigils, marches, rallies and press conferences to support federal legislation that would allow long-time resident immigrants to receive green card status to go to college at an in-state price.

The legislation, known as the DREAM Act in the Senate and the Student Adjustment Act in the House of Representatives, would repeal a provision of a 1996 law that requires students to have lawful immigration status in order to qualify for state residency when entering college. [Read article]

Decision in riot injury case may take weeks

The attorney of a former UA student whose eye was shot out by police during the riot on North Fourth Avenue two years ago said the review of his client's claim could last up to three weeks.

Jeff Knepper, 21, field suit against the City of Tucson after he was hit in the eye with a lead-pellet-filled beanbag fired from a Tucson Police Department shotgun. The event occurred during the riot following UA's April 2, 2001, loss to Duke in the NCAA men's basketball championship game. [Read article]

Car accident shuts down Euclid Ave.

An unidentified man was seriously injured last night when he was struck by a car on North Euclid Avenue south of East Speedway Blvd.

The pedestrian, who was under the influence of alcohol, was carrying a 24-ounce can of malt liquor when an Oldsmobile Alero driven by a UA student hit him.

"The guy just popped out of nowhere," said Will Bohannon, a business freshman who witnessed the accident. "I thought he was toast." [Read article]

Family members try to live normal lives while loved ones serve U.S.

For many students, Iraq is a world away; for Michelle Gibson, it's much closer.

Gibson, a family studies and human development junior, wears on her wedding finger a constant reminder of the conflict in Iraq and its effects on her life.

Gibson, whose husband T.J. is a petty officer third class serving on a ship in the Persian Gulf, is one of a number of UA students who have loved ones serving overseas. [Read article]

Campus takes part in AIDS Awarness Week

Campus group encourages students to Īget involved' in fighting worldwide epidemic

One hundred photographs depicting African children and adults who have experienced the effects of AIDS were displayed on campus this week ÷ spotlighting the disease that kills more than 5 million people every year and has left more than 13 million orphans in Africa alone.

The photography exhibit, "Broken Landscapes," went up Sunday in the Student Union Memorial Center's Diamond Atrium to kick off the awareness week at UA. It was moved to four different union rooms throughout the week. [Read article]
