Softball takes on rival ASU for state bragging rights

At the beginning of the season, all eyes were on softball newcomer Alicia Hollowell.

The freshman, who was thrown into the mix as the top pitcher in UA's rotation, has proved she's worthy of such a job, as she's already surpassed former UA pitcher Jennie Finch's freshman record (24-8) by compiling a mark record and a 0.66 ERA of her own. [Read article]

photo Men's tennis hosts ASU in key matchup

The Arizona men's tennis team will wrap up its regular season against in-state rival Arizona State this weekend in a pivotal match-up full of post-season implications.

No. 33 Arizona will be looking to lock up a playoff spot tomorrow when it plays host to the evenly matched No. 29 Sun Devils. The match, set to start at noon, will be held at Robson Tennis Center.

Last weekend, Arizona (8-10, 2-5) dropped both of its matches versus Pac-10 elite squads No. 7 Stanford and No. 3 California. The Wildcats did not play well against the Bay area schools, winning only one point all weekend ÷ that win coming in doubles play against the Cardinal. [Read article]

photo Women's tennis charges into Tempe

The UA women's tennis team takes the court for its final regular season match this weekend when the Wildcats challenge a familiar foe.

No. 17 Arizona State plays host to the 28th ranked Wildcats on Saturday at noon.

Arizona, 8-11 on the season and 2-5 in Pac-10 play, will be looking to carry some momentum into the Pac-10 outdoor championships, set to kick off later in the week.

The Wildcats are riding high after an upset of No. 4 California last Saturday. Arizona got off to a quick start against the Golden Bears, winning the crucial doubles point, something the Wildcats will need to do to be successful against the Sun Devils. [Read article]

Little Gardner receives big honor

UA men's basketball player Jason Gardner was honored Wednesday by the Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Association of Basketball Coaches as the recipient of the 2003 male Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award.

The award is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding senior who is six-foot tall or under. Gardner joins Sean Elliott (1989) and Jason Terry (1999) as the only University of Arizona players to earn Player-of-the-Year accolades. [Read article]

Laxcats head into playoffs

UA faces off against No. 3 UCSB in WCLL playoff quarterfinals

With its back against the wall, all the UA men's lacrosse team must do to avoid the possibility of its season coming to an end is beat what many consider to be the best team in the country in No. 3 Santa Barbara.

At least the squad is healthy.

Tomorrow, the No. 14 Laxcats (9-7, 4-4) head to "The Pit" at UC Santa Barbara (15-1, 7-1), where the Gauchos were 8-0 this year. The two teams square off in the quarterfinals of the WCLL playoffs, with the winner advancing to the next round. [Read article]
