UA football player acquitted for bar fight

Former UA football player found guilty of criminal damage

Senior defensive end Andre Torrey was acquitted of disorderly conduct over the weekend, along with former member Danny Perry.

However, former team member Javier Martinez was found guilty on one count of criminal damage.

The charges stemmed from a fight July 28 outside of Che's Lounge at North Fourth Avenue and East Seventh Street.

As the proceedings began Friday, charges were dropped against Perry.

Tucson City Court Associate Presiding Magistrate Antonio Riojas Jr. dropped both charges against Torrey. But Martinez was still charged with one count of criminal damage.

A witness identified Martinez as having pushed over his motorcycle outside of Che's Lounge. But because of inconsistencies in descriptions of what the former Wildcat was wearing that night, Martinez was found not guilty on a charge of disorderly conduct, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

Perry testified that he accidentally bumped into the bike when he was leaving the bar. Soon after a man pushed Perry from behind causing him to fall to the ground, Perry said. Then the man began yelling at him, according to the Star. Torey and Martinez said they went to help their teammate as a group of men began hitting him.

Rodriguez plans to appeal the decision.

In September, Torey, Martinez and former wide receiver Bobby Wade, who was involved in a different bar fight, helped build for the Habitat for Humanity "Building Freedom Day," as part of punishment sent down from Coach John Mackovic.
