Arizona State Museum archaeologists piece together an era in the state's history

The land surrounding Winslow, Ariz. seems desolate to most, as they zip along I-40 in the four corners region. But those that look a little closer might see a gateway to the past.

The Little Colorado River, which used to flow constantly in the region, is now dry, only bringing water to the area a few months each winter as the snow melts. It seems the area's only perk is the spectacular sunsets öö and even those are just products of light reflecting off of the dry sands of Great Basin Desert Grassland. [Read article]

photo Goodbye Economics, hello Chavez

One signature is all that remains before the Economics building will be renamed the Cesar E. Chavez building in honor of the Yuma-born farm labor organizer.

The renaming proposal was submitted to UA President Pete Likins last week after the Naming Advisory Committee passed it, according to committee chair Wanda Howell.

Likins, who had said earlier this year that he supported the idea, is expected to give the green light to the name change. [Read article]

Blaze provides ominous show as firefighters gain on containment

The Aspen fire has provided some Tucsonans with an alternative to the area's nightlife, as people have gathered throughout the Sabino Canyon area to watch the fire on Mount Lemmon.

Approximately 30 people assembled at North Sabino Canyon Drive and East Sunset Boulevard Sunday night to watch the fire and receive updates from an information booth at the scene. [Read article]

KUATöTV back up and running

KUAT-TV's Channel 6 transmitter went off the air over the weekend, following a telephone line outage that prevented station operators on the UA campus from broadcasting their signal Saturday.

The signal was manually restored around 7 a.m. Sunday when Michael Stanley, operator-manager of the Mount Lemmon Cooperative Water Co., went up to Mount Bigelow, where the transmitter is located. [Read article]

10 girls were told they could not attend school until they underwent pregnancy and STD testing after they skipped class to attend a "hooky" party, according to a lawsuit filed by the students' families on Tuesday.

$1 for admission with bets of up to $4 on fights at a Roanoke, Va., 4-H children's' summer camp. Roanoke County Sheriff's officers said on Tuesday they are investigating allegations that counselors at the camp arranged fistfights between boys aged 9 to 13, charged admission and allowed betting.
