Program lets undergrads pursue individual research

Cyndi Perry has always loved to learn. In high school, her favorite subject was marine ecology, and she still remembers the times her teacher would tell her about the wonders of the ocean, as recorded in textbooks and research journals.

By the time she got to college, however, Perry had grown tired of reading books and listening to teachers. She wanted to do her own exploring and pursue her new interest, the human heart. [Read article]

Likins humble on retirement

President didn't see news in decision to retire

It's been one week since the Tucson newspapers caught University of Arizona President Pete Likins off guard by announcing before he did that he will retire in three years.

"It just never occurred to me that anyone would regard as newsworthy my decision to retire at age 70," Likins stated in an e-mail he sent to the university community July 23. [Read article]

Zach Robbins has always wanted to be a doctor, and when he and 109 other first-year medical students donned white coats for the first time Friday night, he came one step closer to realizing his dream.

The ninth annual White Coat Ceremony, held at Centennial Hall, marked the beginning of the class of 2007's journey to becoming practicing physicians as they were inducted into the UA College of Medine. [Read article]

Odds & Ends

Rec Center to undergo repairs

Portions of the Student Recreation Center will be closed for the next few weeks as crews work to refinish the building's wood floors.

The South Gym and the track over the gym floor are both closed right now, and racquetball courts 1-4 will close Aug. 4. When work in both areas is complete, crews will work on the North Gym and racquetball courts 5-8. The floors in the squash courts and multi-purpose rooms will be refinished over the semester break. A note to our readers

Summer Wildcat editor-in-chief Arek Sarkissian II formally resigned Friday afternoon.

The editorial staff of the Summer Wildcat nominated Daniel Scarpinato as interim editor for the remainder of the summer.

Scarpinato was editor of the Daily Wildcat last spring and served as design chief this summer.


 

Corrections

· Several stories in the B section of last week's issue were cut off due to a production error. The full version of each article can be viewed online at wildcat.arizona.edu. Corrected versions of the issue are limited, but can be requested by visiting Arizona Student Media.
· The article, "Bookstore turns 1 year," that appeared in last week's issue was incorrectly attributed to Ian Musil. Ty Young wrote the article.
· A headline in last week's issue incorrectly stated that Kappa Sigma lost its charter. The chapter lost only its university recognition.
· In last week's article "It's All Greek to Me" the Wildcat reported that Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities will be unable to participate in fall rush based on a list provided by the Dean of Students office. According to the fraternities and IFC officials, these fraternities will be able to participate in rush.
