Rec Center to undergo repairs
Portions of the Student Recreation Center will be closed for the next few weeks as crews work to refinish the building's wood floors.
The South Gym and the track over the gym floor are both closed right now, and racquetball courts 1-4 will close Aug. 4. When work in both areas is complete, crews will work on the North Gym and racquetball courts 5-8. The floors in the squash courts and multi-purpose rooms will be refinished over the semester break.
In order to refinish the floors, workers must sand, seal and re-strip the wood. The areas will also be closed because of the fumes, which can be dangerous when inhaled.
For questions about sport club schedules or room availability, call Associate Director of Campus Recreation Brian Carswell at 621-8708.
Career fair to hit student union
UA Career Services announced last week it will hold UA Career Days, the largest career fair of the year, on Sept. 16 and 17 in the Student Union Memorial Center Grand Ballroom.
The fair, which is exclusively for UA students, will feature more than 100 representatives from companies and employers across the country. They will be available both days to answer student questions and to inform students about full-time and internship opportunities.
Students who don't know what to wear for interviews, how to present their resumes or where to even start can prepare for Career Days at the UA Career Days Kick-Off, which will take place from noon ÷ 2 p.m. on Sept. 10 in the Career Services Offices, Suite 411 of the Student Union Memorial Center.
For more information, call Susan Miller at 621-1408.
UA solar car finishes tenth
After crossing the country in a car that ran entirely on sunlight, the UA's Solar Racing Team came in 10th place July 23 when they crossed the finish line in the 2003 American Solar Challenge.
The team traveled only by daylight for 10 days and earned a final time of just over 75 hours.
Of the 20 cars that were able to compete in the race after a qualifying round, the UA's car, Turbulence, was one of 12 that made it to the finish line on its own. Eight other cars did not complete the race, while others had to be trailered to various checkpoints.
The University of Missouri-Rolla came in first place with a final time of 51 hours and 47 minutes.
Workshop to address inequality
UA President Pete Likins has invited all department heads and other campus leaders to attend a workshop on social inequality and privilege on August 18 from 1:30 ÷ 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Memorial Center's Rincon Room.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Allan G. Johnson, author of several books, including "Privilege, Power, and Difference," "The Gender Knot: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy" and "Human Arrangements: An Introduction to Sociology."
Johnson, who teaches at the University of Hartford, is also known for his work on patriarchy and gender inequality, race and white privilege, and the dynamics of gender inequality in schools and the workplace.
