After sweeping intrastate rival Arizona State last weekend at the "Madhouse on Main," the Icecats hope to ride the momentum gained last weekend tonight and tomorrow.
The No. 10 Icecats will face Weber State tonight at 7:30 and Utah State tomorrow at the Tucson Convention Center before they play both No. 5 Delaware and No. 1 Penn State in the coming weeks.
"We anticipate that we can win every game that we play early on," head coach Leo Golembiewski said. "We are not looking past (Weber State and Utah State), but we are going to need to execute so that we can be sharp when we get to Penn State and Delaware in the upcoming weeks."
On opening night last Friday, the Icecats came out firing early, jumping to a quick 4-0 lead and shutting down an Arizona State team that had won five straight games prior to its trip to Tucson.
With Weber State and Utah State visiting this weekend, Golembiewski expects no let down from his team.
Neither of this weekend's opponents are currently ranked by the American College Hockey Association.
The Icecats can expect solid play up and down the lineup, as junior forward Andrew Fredericks shined last weekend, tallying six points during the two-game set, including four goals in Friday's blowout, good for his first career hat trick.
Junior Matt Naylor also added a goal and four assists on Friday night.
While the Icecats are a young team on paper, they didn't play like it against visiting ASU.
Freshman forward Don Holtz also tallied his first career hat trick on Saturday, while adding an assist, as well. Sophomores Mickey Meehan and Shaun Brooks also helped pace the Icecat youth movement, each scoring goals this weekend, with Brooks adding five assists to his point total.
Defensively, the Icecats came out firing on all cylinders, with a big weekend from senior captain Bill Pardue and freshman blueliner Mike Pelletier. Pelletier had a goal and five assists in the two-game set.
Goaltender Bryan Aronchick has picked up where he left off last season, coasting to an easy win last Friday before being the driving force in the Icecats' close victory on Saturday. Aronchick allowed just two goals on 25 shots on Friday, while netting 33 saves on 37 shots on Saturday.
"Aronchick was just solid," Golembiewski said. "They were shooting from all over the place and we were playing pretty sloppy in general. He carried us."
The Icecat players are sure of themselves and their goal of winning a championship, and are looking to put that on display this weekend.
"We have worked hard all week to minimize the mistakes against ASU," Fredericks said. "We won those two games, which is a good start, but we want to come out and kill these teams and show everyone that we deserve to be ranked higher. We aren't getting any respect at all right now."
