Possession of dangerous drug, outstanding warrant

A man was arrested on an outstanding warrant Friday while he was in possession of both crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, after police saw him leave his car in the middle of a road and start running to a Jack in the Box, reports stated.

At about 2:35 p.m., an officer was completing a traffic stop west of the intersection of North Park Avenue and East Second Street, when he saw a car stop south of the intersection.

The driver of the car got out of the vehicle, leaving the car in the road, and began to run northbound on North Park Avenue toward East Speedway Boulevard. Northbound traffic on North Park Avenue was forced to swerve around the car that was left in the street.

The officer began to search the area in his patrol car for the man, but was unable to find him. The officer then went to investigate the abandoned car. While investigating the vehicle, a student approached police.

The student told the officer she was walking northbound on North Park Avenue, passing East Second Street, when she saw the man briefly inside the car. As she continued to walk northbound past East First Street, she saw the man run passed her toward Jack in the Box, 934 E. Speedway Blvd., reports stated.

The student followed the man to speak with him and see if he was all right. He told the student that the clutch had gone out in his car, and he was using a pay phone to call a friend for help.

Police went to the Jack in the Box and found the man. As soon as police began to speak with the man, he said, "Is this about the car I left down the street?" When police said it was, the man explained the car's clutch problems. The man gave police an Arizona Driver License for identification. A records check showed he had a warrant issued by the Tucson Police Department for failure to appear in court for a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested the man and searched him. While searching the man, police found a small clear baggie with spade designs on it, that contained a white crystal-looking substance. Police asked the man what was inside the baggie, and he replied, "It's crystal-meth," reports stated.

Officers asked the man if there was anything inside the car that police should know about before it was towed.

"Ya, there's a roach in the ashtray," the man said. Police asked what he meant by a "roach," and the man said "weed," reports stated.

Police later found the possible marijuana "roach" in the ashtray. The 24-year-old man was taken to Pima County Jail for booking. The crystal-methamphetamine and marijuana were submitted into University of Arizona Police Department property as evidence, and will be sent to the Department of Public Safety laboratory to be analyzed, reports stated.

Vandalism of university property

An employee found a bench turned over, another bench damaged, a trash can knocked over and wooden pallets leaning against the doors of a campus building Friday, reports stated.

At about 6 a.m., while doing a security check, an employee found a bench turned over west of the Communication building, 1103 E. University Blvd. The employee also found wooden pallets leaning against the south doors of the building, two filled trash cans knocked over and a concrete bench that appeared to be separated from its legs.

The incident occurred between midnight and 6 a.m., reports stated.

Custodial staff and Facilities Management were called to clean and make repairs. Police took photographs of the vandalism and placed the film into property as evidence.

There are no suspects or witnesses, reports stated.

An employee reported Friday morning that someone threw a rock through a window of the Administration building, 1401 E. University Blvd., reports stated.

At about 7:30 a.m., the employee told officers about the incident. She said the building was locked and secured the night before at about 6 p.m. She said she arrived to an office within the building at about 7:30 a.m. and found a broken window in the northeast corner of the room.

Several feet away from the broken window was a hand-sized rock.

Police took several photographs of the damage and placed the film into property as evidence. No other damage was found.

Custodial staff and Facilities Management were called to come clean and repair the broken window. There are no suspects or witnesses, reports stated.
