photo Scoring up a storm

Kelly Nelson knows how to score. A lot. So much, in fact, that as a redshirt freshman, she has already broken the Arizona single-season scoring record with two games to play in the season.

Nelson beat the old record of 11 goals on Friday, when she scored the game-winner in the 5th minute of double overtime as the Wildcats played host to then-No. 20 Washington and beat the Huskies 2-1, marking the first time Arizona has ever downed a ranked opponent. [Read article]

photo Newcomer-dominated Red team beats Blue, 91-73

Last night's Red-Blue Game was supposed to showcase a host of newcomers, and they did not disappoint, though the freshman blue-chippers were not exactly the center of attention.

Junior transfer Jessica Duger scored 18 points in 19 minutes to lead the Red team to a 91-73 victory at McKale Center last night.

"She had the game of her life," head coach Joan Bonvicini said. "I'm really excited for her." [Read article]

ÎPolkey' a one-name wonder

All the best seem to be known by one name ÷ Shaq, Kobe, Duncan and Jordan.

If Arizona women's basketball player Shawntinice Polk has her way, she will be known by a single name also ÷ Polkey.

Jonathan Norris, the UA public address announcer, called her Polkey every time she stepped on the court last night during the Red-Blue game, and the UA media relations department has asked all media to call her Polkey for the rest of her career in Tucson. [Read article]

photo Men's hoops hits the floor tonight

If the storyline of last season's Red-Blue Game was youth, this season's theme could very well be experience.

With the Arizona men's basketball team returning all five members of its starting lineup ÷ compared to only returning one last season ÷ the team's experience will be on display for free tonight at 7 in McKale Center.

"These scrimmages give us a chance to rejuvenate ourselves," sophomore Channing Frye said. "We have been practicing really hard and this gives us a chance to show our fans what we are learning. It also gives players an opportunity to step up and show that they deserve minutes during the season." [Read article]

Blaming the coach? Wait another year

Want to hear a story? Two years ago, a long-standing coach in the Pacific 10 Conference was so close to being fired his assistants should have carried around fire extinguishers.

He hadn't had a successful season in just enough years for the fans of his team to forget he had the second-most wins in school history, and had led the team to three of its only seven bowl berths in 106 years.

But the athletic department let the coach come back for one more year. It was clear to everyone that the coach ÷ and his team ÷ would have to work some miracles if he was to keep his job. [Read article]

Volleyball Notes: Pac-10 still top conference

The Pacific 10 Conference is considered to be the strongest volleyball conference in the country, but this year that has been more apparent then ever.

In years past, Southern California, Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona have been among the nation's best, with the other six teams in the Pac-10 viewed as average at best.

However, those four teams are not sitting alone atop the conference anymore. In the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, seven teams from the Pac-10 were ranked in the Top 25 and California just missed becoming the eighth conference team with a No. 31 ranking. [Read article]
