Student senator Travis Pritchett proposed enhancing outdoor lighting across campus at a student government meeting last night.
Pritchett proposed adding more lighting at 17 locations, including the Cochise Residence Hall, Gould-Simpson building, Modern Languages building, Science-Engineering Library and various campus parking lots.
Pritchett has been working on campus lighting since the beginning of the semester, picking up where last year's senate left off.
"So far this semester I have conducted three walk/drive-throughs of the campus to analyze the current lighting situation," Pritchett said.
Working with representatives from Risk Management, Facilities Management, Parking and Transportation Services, Dean of Students, the University of Arizona Police Department and Campus Recreation, Pritchett has organized a report based on findings from an Oct. 11 drive-through of campus.
"Currently we are seeking lines of funding to install the proposed lights. I believe it is vitally important that the university finds a way to assure adequate lighting throughout the campus," Pritchett said.
In other student government news, Cisco Aguilar, a student representative for the Marshall Foundation and former Associated Students of the University of Arizona president, was present at the meeting to discuss construction plans for the area on East Second Street and North Park Avenue.
"Within a few weeks the hole on Park and Second will soon be filled," Aguilar said.
Construction plans for the location include building a three-story building; the top two floors will be used for UA office space and the first floor will be used for retail space.
"The Arizona Bookstore will be on the first floor," Aguilar said. The Marshall Foundation is considering putting a movie theater in the vicinity and relocating the Pei Wei restaurant.
ASUA senators and ASUA President Doug Hartz will be on the UA Mall today from noon to 1 p.m. to talk with students and community members.
