At times this season, the UA volleyball team has played down to weaker opponents.

However, in two games over the weekend against Oregon and Oregon State ÷ the bottom two teams in the Pacific 10 Conference ÷ the Wildcats showed their true colors, as they swept both teams in McKale Center in the team's final home matches of the season.

With games against No. 2 Southern California and No. 19 UCLA this week, the Wildcats wanted to build momentum on senior weekend.

UA (14-9 overall, 10-6 Pac-10) didn't play its best volleyball of the season, but still managed a sweep of both teams.

"Under the circumstances, we played well enough to win," UA head coach David Rubio said. "I told the players that even if the adrenaline rush is not there like when you play USC you have to take care of business in every match. These are the teams that we will face in the first round of the NCAA tournament."

The Wildcats faced some adversity this weekend as freshman Kim Glass was unable to start due to a calf strain.

"I feel OK," said Glass on Saturday night. "I can't predict the future, but if this was USC or UCLA, I would have been able to start. I just need to relax and make sure it doesn't get any worse."

Due to the injury, senior Christina Frost started for the Wildcats, which marked the first start of the season for her.

"It is a bonus to start on Senior Night," Frost said. "But that is not what is important to me. I just want to do whatever it takes in practice or in the game to help us win. If I don't play, I am OK with that as long as we are winning."

It was a special moment for Frost and Arizona's other seniors ÷ Laurie Gardner, Lisa Rutledge, Rachel Williams and Shannon Torregrosa ÷ who were playing the final home matches of their careers, and were honored before Saturday night's game.

"I talked to Christina and I told her that it worked out well for her," Rubio said. "I have so much respect for Christina. She hasn't played that much this year and it was nice for her to finish her home career like this."

In Glass's absence, freshman Bre Ladd stepped up and led the way with 28 kills on the weekend and a .530 hitting percentage.

"Bre was exceptional for us," Rubio said. "She showed that she is a force and that she is as good as anyone we have. She is a pretty terrific player that really dominates for us."

Rutledge and Torregrosa were equally as impressive in the final two home matches of their careers, as they added 28 and 23 kills, respectively.

"Lisa is playing so well for us," Rubio said. "I am very pleased with her mentality. She is playing really aggressively. She is such a tough competitor."

Even though Glass only played sparingly against OSU, she was the difference in the match.

When Glass was on the floor, the Wildcats won 36 out of 53 points to pull away in each of the three games.

Glass is only 19 kills away from breaking the freshman record of 417 set by former Wildcat Barb Bell.

With Glass expected to return to full strength, the Wildcats return to practice this afternoon to prepare for their final Pac-10 road trip of the year at UCLA and conference-leading USC.
