The UA men's rugby team finished up its fall schedule with a weekend split against two of California's toughest squads.
The Wildcat club team traveled to the Golden State to battle St. Mary's Moraga and Stanford.
On Friday, the Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the fall when they were upset by the Gaels of St. Mary's Moraga by a score of 41-28.
"We agreed as a team that we could have won if we had just played a little tougher," said head coach Dave Sitton.
Arizona avenged its loss and closed out its fall season with an inspired victory against the Cardinal.
Senior hooker Drew Hoffman scored two trys, leading the Wildcats to a 55-12 victory. Excellent ball movement resulted in seven different players scoring trys against the defending Division II champs.
UA finish its limited fall schedule with a 3-1-0 record. The junior varsity squad finished its season unbeaten (3-0) with a convincing 52-5 victory yesterday in California, as well.
Arizona will compete in the Warren Lee Sevens Club Tournament on Dec. 18. The games follow the same format as rugby with a few exceptions, the most notable being seven-minute halves to the 15-minute halves of rugby. Sitton compared the "Sevens" games to that of doubles tennis. The regular season will resume in the beginning of next year. Arizona will host Utah, a member of last year's Final Four, Jan. 18 in Tucson.
Arizona has announced that the rugby team has accepted invitations to compete on a South African university tour in May. The tour will include games in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban, South Africa. The games will be held following the spring semester, on May 19, 2003.
