Baseball signs two pitchers
The Arizona baseball team added another pair of arms during the early signing period, head coach Andy Lopez announced today.
Lefthander Griffin Phelps and righty Jason Ward signed National Letters-of-Intent to play for the Wildcats next season.
Phelps is a hard-throwing southpaw from Farmington, N.M. He has posted a perfect 12-0 record during his high school career to go along with a 2.15 ERA.
Ward (Spanish Fork, Utah/Utah Valley CC/Spanish Fork HS), who is currently enrolled at Utah Valley Community College, will join Arizona next season with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Gymcats sign two recruits
Arizona women's gymnastics head coach Bill Ryden announced yesterday that two international gymnasts have inked National Letters-of-Intent and will join the Arizona gymnastics team for the 2003-04 season.
The Wildcats signed Aubrey Taylor of Burlington, Ontario, and Danyra Varela of Phoenix.
"These gymnasts were recruited to make an immediate impact as soon they step into the gym," Ryden said. "These two gymnasts aren't projects. They are proven athletes who should help us right away."
UA boxer to take on ASUM
UA boxer Jeremy Zarowitz will compete in the ASU Boxing Invitational tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.
The ASU Boxing Team will host UA, Cal, UNLV and Nevada/Reno .
Zarowitx, the president of the UA boxing club, will fight undefeated Sun Devil boxer Lars Havens.
There will be 12 bouts, with one featuring a fight pitting Pat Murphy, ASU's baseball coach, against Father Joe, a priest who has been training for over 3 years.
