Another home game, another 30-point victory. But judging by the mood in the locker room, you would never have known.
The tempo wasn't the same, the excitement wasn't there, and despite last night's 91-58 win over Saint Louis in McKale Center, players and coaches alike felt there was a lot of room for improvement.
"It was kind of slow and frustrating," senior forward Rick Anderson said. "We didn't have a lot of good ball movement, and it was hard to get to the glass. They were after us."
After a slow start to the game, things never reached the high-octane style the Wildcats have become accustomed to this season.
"We feel good that we won by 30, but it was a little frustrating," senior forward Luke Walton said.
Walton, playing for the first time since injuring his ankle in the opening minutes against Northern Arizona, struggled from the field, going 0-of-5, but dished out a game-high seven assists in 19 minutes.
"Aside from my shot, I think I played pretty good," Walton said.
The Wildcats took the lead for good with 14:53 remaining in the first half, but didn't lead by double digits until 10 minutes later.
Until that point, Arizona hadn't scored more than two baskets in a row, until it capped off a 9-0 run to go ahead by 19 with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Along with Saint Louis' slow style of play, Arizona was challenged for every rebound, making it difficult to get out and fast break following missed shots.
"The setting was great for us," Saint Louis head coach Brad Soderberg said. "Our kids had to step up. They didn't play with fear, and they played hard."
Head coach Lute Olson said the no-fear attitude reflected the fact that Arizona only recorded six steals as a team, and gave up 20 offensive rebounds.
"The biggest single concern is going to the glass," Olson said. "We can't give up 20 offensive rebounds."
Olson also pointed out that for nearly the entire game, the press did not yield the type of results it did against Western Kentucky and Northern Arizona.
"The rotation was a half-second late, and that ended up in a lay-in," Olson said. "We were a split second behind (on the press)."
Olson did compliment his team on the way it contested shots, and offensive rebounds in comparison to UA's shooting percentage.
"The lay-ins were glaring, but we held them to 36 percent shooting," he said.
Arizona shot 47 percent for the game and managed to grab 19 offensive rebounds, something Olson said he wanted to build on.
