After a broken Zamboni machine, an hour-long delay to start the game, and a dominating shutout on the heels of a hat trick by senior captain Dave Loftus, UA Icecats head coach Leo Golembiewski finally had his moment in time on Friday öö 500 career victories.
The opening faceoff did not occur until after 8:35 p.m., more than one hour after the scheduled start time for the game, and the No. 7 Icecats and visiting No. 20 Robert Morris College both started sluggish. The Icecats turned up the heat after the first intermission, coasting to an 8-0 victory.
The Icecats had no trouble disposing of the Eagles on Saturday as well, skating to a 12-3 victory, upping their season record to 15-4 overall.
Senior forward Matt Naylor led the weekend routing of Robert Morris, collecting four goals and five assists, and increasing his team-leading point total to 43 points in 19 games.
Sophomore Shaun Brooks continued his outstanding play as of late, scoring 11 of his team-leading 20 goals over the past six games, including three goals against the Eagles.
Loftus followed Friday's hat trick with one goal and three assists on Saturday.
Icecat sharpshooter Mickey Meehan was inactive during the weekend series. Since returning from break, Meehan racked up four goals in as many games before his absence against Robert Morris.
The Icecat defense looked especially tough on Friday, helping sophomore goaltender Bryan Aronchick pick up his first shutout of the year, stopping 34 shots on goal by the Eagles.
The only thing that seemed to hold the Icecats back on either night were the two unexpected delays, compliments of a broken Zamboni machine on Friday night and a loose section of plexiglass near the northeast corner of the rink on Saturday.
Friday night's game was delayed an hour and five minutes before the ice could be resurfaced, while Saturday night's 40-minute delay occurred midway through the second period when a forklift and operations crew were brought onto the ice to replace the malfunctioning section of glass.
With the series against Robert Morris, the Icecats finished a two-month, 12-game home stand that began against Colorado State on Nov. 15, with a record of 11-1. The lone loss came against rival Arizona State, 6-5, on Dec. 7.
Starting Friday, the Icecats will embark on a six-game road trip that will include games at No.11 Saint Louis, No. 17 ASU, and CSU.
The Icecats return home for their last two regular season games against ASU on Feb. 21 and 22 at the Tucson Convention Center.
