The Arizona women's tennis team had a successful fall season, but endured mixed results at the Indoor Pacific 10 Conference Championship this past weekend.
The event marked the last individual contest before the spring team season begins.
It also marked the first time the Wildcats have competed since the middle of November.
UA head coach Vicky Maes said the players were a bit rusty, but she was pleased with the way her team competed.
UA's top player, sophomore Maja Mlakar, was defeated in the first round by Oregon's Daria Panova.
Mlakar spent most of the fall season recovering from a variety of nagging injuries, and Maes said that she is not concerned her top player was upset.
"Maja has not played in over three months," Maes said. "Maja showed what she can do last season and I expect her to come back strong this season."
Mlakar spent the winter break back home in Slovenia, and harsh weather conditions made it impossible for her to see any time on the court.
"Maja had no time to practice at home in Slovenia," Maes said. "She really had only a few days to prepare for this tournament. Once she gets some time back on the court she will be fine."
Mlakar also teamed up with junior Debbie Larocque in doubles, and the results were the same.
The 25th-ranked doubles duo was upset in the first round.
Mlakar may not have had success this past weekend, but fellow sophomore Dianne Hollands made a name for herself.
During the fall season, Hollands won singles and doubles titles, and this past weekend she advanced to the semifinals, which Maes said showed that Hollands is going to be a threat once the Pac-10 regular season begins.
"Dianne Hollands had a great fall season." Maes said. "She has been working hard and it is paying off for her."
Newcomer Emilie Scribot was the biggest surprise as she advanced to the semifinals in her first tournament as a Wildcat.
"Emilie was a pleasant surprise as a newcomer," Maes said. "Overall the team was rusty, but they played hard. They are all looking forward to the first team match of the spring season."
The Wildcats may be rusty, but they don't have the luxury of an extensive practice schedule as they take the court for the first match of the season Thursday against San Diego.
