Gymcats win opener

By James Kelley

Powered by sophomore Monica Bisordi's second straight all-around title, the No. 11 UA women's gymnastics team (2-0, 1-0) defeated No. 10 Oregon State (2-2, 0-2) in its home and Pac-10 opener on Friday by a score of 195.775 to 194.800. Oregon State's only previous loss came to top ranked UCLA.

Bisordi, who also won the all-around title during the Gymcats' victory over then-No. 11 Minnesota, won with a score of 39.350, followed by sophomore Jamie Schell, who scored a personal best 39.325. OSU juniors Lindsay Nelson and Tanya Ricioli tied for third at 38.600.

"Tonight it was a little shaky for me in the warm-ups, but I put that behind me for the meet," Bisordi said. "I feel this year I have a really good chance to be one of the top gymnasts, so I just want to keep up the good work."

UA head coach Bill Ryden feels the performance was satisfying and hopes the Gymcats keep improving, while figuring out who needs to be in the lineup.

"Yeah, we definitely (are satisfied), it is so early in the year so we're still in the development mode trying to figure out how the routines are going to work and what changes need to be made," Ryden said. "We made improvements from last week to this week, had a couple falls in the floor exercises but the other three events we were better than last week."

Though Arizona led after every rotation, it did drop the vault, 49.175 to 48.875 and the floor exercise events.

Despite the win, the Gymcats fell to No. 15 and the Beavers to No. 13 in the NCAA rankings.

In spite of the drop, caused by the usage of total team scores to determine position and not voter's opinions, Ryden knows the importance of winning each meet.

"We're moving in the right direction," Ryden said.

Overall Ryden feels the team improved over its first meet.

"We were better this week," Ryden said. "The first meet is always sort of like a guessing game. The first meet for any of the freshmen is always a stressful experience, because they don't know what's going on. The way we compete is totally unlike their clubs with the team format and the veterans have to get back in the mindset of competing every week."

On Friday, the Gymcats head to Washington to face the unranked Huskies and unranked San Jose State. Their next home meet is Jan. 31 against Arizona State.
