Quarterbacks, athletes highlight top-30 recruiting class for Mackovic's staff

Any doubts voiced about head coach John Mackovic's leadership abilities might be starting to fall by the wayside, as supported by the 23 national letters of intent the UA football team received yesterday.

The 2003 Wildcat signing class received top-30 rankings from both Prepstar and Rivals.com, two of the premier prep-recruiting firms in the nation. [Read article]

Fall football fiasco leaves few ill effects

For weeks last fall, Arizona football was more synonymous with mutiny, drama and disgrace than yards, touchdowns and victories.

Yesterday, 18 high school football players decided to further their careers by wearing the Arizona "A" on their helmets. This might not seem like such a big deal, but given the events of last fall, one might wonder why Tucson was the place to come.

"It was a perfect fit, the academics are good and I liked the environment," offensive lineman Peter Graniello said. "I think I will have a good four or five years there." [Read article]

No. 2 Wildcats begin two game trip tonight

Parody is the word of the year in college basketball, as no team in the top five has been able to avoid the upset bug.

With Florida and Texas both losing Tuesday night, the No. 2 Wildcats enter the Pacific Northwest tonight, attempting to regain the top spot in the country against Washington at 8:30 p.m. M.S.T. at Bank of America arena.

"Rick, Luke, and I are the leaders of this team," senior guard Jason Gardner said. "We let everyone know that we can't overlook anyone. We finally realize that now. This week, we have two Pac-10 games and we want to separate ourselves from everyone." [Read article]

Dix's Pix: Do you see what I see?

In order to make the Final Four more competitive, the NCAA will refuse to tell Luke Walton where the games are being played. In what will later be called his most brilliant coaching move, head coach Lute Olson will activate Bill Walton from the announcers' booth. Papa Walton will go for 25 points and 12 rebounds, and the Wildcats will beat Florida for the NCAA championship.

If tonight's matchup between Arizona and No. 20 ranked Washington is anything like the two teams' last meeting, you'll want to be there.

The Wildcats take on the Huskies tonight at 7 p.m. at McKale Center in the team's first home game in almost three weeks.

UA (14-6, 7-4) dropped a 60-59 decision on Jan. 11 to Washington in Seattle. The Wildcats struggled from the free throw line in the game's final minute and opened the door for a Huskies game-winning shot at the buzzer. [Read article]
