Making the date· without the wait

By Jennifer Duffy

If you're putting off making a reservation for Valentine's Day dinner then you will probably wind up dining with your sweetheart at the bar.

That is, unless you know the right people.

Many Tucson restaurants are already booked for the holiday, but restaurant personnel say not to give up hope: there may still be a chance to find a table for two instead of two barstools.

Anthony's in the Catalinas is no longer taking reservations for the evening hours. However, manager Frank Inzunza said there is always a way around the reservation book.

"Depending on who you are I'll be able to fit you in. That's just part of the restaurant business," Inzunza said.

The restaurant can seat up to 400 people "so there is usually something we can do," he said.

Although there are still a few restaurants with reservations available, most places will try to accommodate walk-ins on the special day.

"When you walk in to a restaurant like Janos reservations are the key, but we'll do everything we can to accommodate someone, but sometimes you'll wait," said Janos Wilder, owner of the restaurant.

Wilder also offered some advice for planning occasions like Valentine's Day.

"Give the restaurant anopportunity to plan for special events," he suggested.

If you don't make reservations early and you're not Lute Olsen, don't count on being able to rely on your pocketbook to try to persuade the host.

If someone famous like Lute Olsen walked into Elle A Wine Country Restaurant without a reservation "we might be able to come up with something," said host Katie Cefaratti, who "would never accept a bribe."

"It's disrespectful to the people with reservations," she said.

Wildflower hostess Emily Trimble has been offered $20 to seat someone without a reservation, but has never taken a bribe.

Regardless of where you go and where you end up sitting, it's who you're with that will make the evening memorable and worth the wait.
