This week's winners and losers ...

The bomb: The 1,700 UA students who successfully defeated the student activity fee referendum this week. The vote came way too soon, and the logistics of the fee weren't even discussed before it was put to a vote. It's a little worrisome that more than 1,300 students voted for it, though.

A bomb: Spring Fling during Easter. Taking the event off campus is one thing, but holding it while many students will be out of town celebrating Easter with their families doesn't seem like the brightest thing to do. Then again, hindsight's 20/20.

The bomb: The last call bill on the governor's desk, waiting for approval. The bill would extend Arizona bars' closing time from 1 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Arizona is one of few states with such an early last call, and there's no evidence to suggest an earlier last call does anything to improve driving conditions. Let's hope Gov. Napolitano finishes the job.

The bomb: UA softball. The No. 1 team in the nation made two amazing comebacks against No. 2 UCLA last weekend in Tucson. Utility player Shelly Schultz made both game-winning hits for the Wildcats. It's nice to have a great team like this to cheer on after the disappointments of Arizona's football and basketball seasons.

A bomb: Former U.N. chief weapons inspector Hans Blix's remark that Iraq was better off with Saddam Hussein. "What's positive is that Saddam Hussein and his bloody regime is gone, but when figuring out the score, the negatives weigh more," Blix said Tuesday. Those freed from Iraq's torture chambers may beg to differ.

The bomb: UConn do it! Props to the Huskies' men's and women's basketball teams for winning NCAA championships on consecutive days ÷ the first time in NCAA history that one school won both titles in the same season. Emeka Okafor and Diana Taurasi are talented individuals.
