UA men's golf will embark on one of its longest road trips of the season when it travels to Hot Springs, Va., this weekend to participate in The Preview by Ping and Golfweek.
Arizona has competed in the Virginia tourney 13 of the past 15 years, taking home a top-five finish five times. The Wildcats go to Virginia ranked No. 11 in the latest Precept/GCAA Coaches Poll.
Last weekend, the Wildcats finished eighth in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. Juniors Nick Juszczak and Chris Nallen both finished eight strokes off the lead.
Women's tennis begins season in Waco, Texas
Wildcat women's tennis will open its season on the road this weekend when it heads to Waco, Texas, to take on some of the South's finest.
The nine-team tourney will take place on the campus of Baylor University. Competition will include host school Baylor, Mississippi State, Tulane, Texas, Texas-Arlington, Auburn, Kentucky and Southern Methodist.
Leading the Wildcats will be No. 18 Maja Mlakar. The junior replaces the departed Emilie Scribot as Arizona's top singles player.
Backing Mlakar will be junior Diane Hollands and senior Debbie Larocque.
Mlakar will pair up with Iza Ferreira in doubles play, while veteran Kelly Perry teams up with Hollands.
Cross Country close to home for meet
UA cross country will host the annual Dave Murray Invitational this weekend at the Dell Urich Golf Course in Tucson.
The meet will consist of two long-distance events: a women's 4,300-meter race and a men's 6,300-meter contest.
The race is named after popular Arizona coach Dave Murray. Murray coached track and field from 1968 until his retirement in 2001. He was named Pac-10 Cross-Country Coach of the Year eight times and NCAA Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 1984.
The women's race is scheduled to begin Saturday afternoon at 5:15, while the men's event follows at 5:45. The event is open to all participants from the community who wish to compete.
Men's water polo heads to Colorado
The UA men's water polo club team opens its season this weekend with six matches in Colorado against some familiar foes.
Among this weekend's games at the U.S. Air Force Academy's facility in Colorado Springs is a match up with the host Falcons. The Wildcats have had difficulty defeating Air Force in the past, but former team captain Sean Devlin thinks the UA's fortune is about to change.
"I think we've got a legitimate shot at beating those guys," Devlin said.
Arizona returns all but one player from last year's team that won the Southwest Conference title. Rounding out the Wildcats' weekend will be matches against the University of Colorado "B" squad, along with Utah, Utah State and the Colorado School of Mines.
Men's soccer plays host to Sun Devils
Rival Arizona State travels to Tucson this weekend to take on the Arizona men's club soccer team.
The Wildcats have dominated the rivalry of late, going undefeated against the Sun Devils in over four years.
"It's a new season," senior midfielder Mychal Sierra said. "We don't know what to expect."
The Wildcats are coming off a second-place finish in last weekend's tournament. Arizona went 3-1 in the tourney with wins over Embry Riddle (4-1), UTEP (forfeit) and Thunderbird College (4-2.)
The matchup with the Sun Devils will be played at 1:00 p.m. at Arizona's ICA field.
