Starting today, UA students can take a break from their studies to rock out on the Mall.
The UA Battle of the Bands will be held tonight and Wednesday on the Mall from 5 to 7.
The competition, sponsored by ASUA and the University Activities Board, is in its second year and will feature the bands Troy's Bucket, Sarcastic Atoms, Haley Jane, Gorilla Behind Bars, Elsewhere, Sidetracked, Camp Courageous, and Oliver Nothing.
The bands reflect all different genres of music, from rock to mellow guitar-based sounds, said Sarah Calvert, ASUA special events coordinator.
One of the bands, Troy's Bucket, has brass players from the UA's marching band in its ranks.
"It's a really great chance for students to see what's going on in local music," Calvert said. "It's also free entertainment."
Students are encouraged to listen to the performances and then vote for their favorite band. The finals will be held on Oct. 27, in which students can help decide on the winner.
Students looking for more information concerning the event should send an email to UABattleofthebands@hotmail.com.
