Newcomers wow McKale crowd of 4,000-plus fans

Arizona basketball fans making their way to McKale Center Saturday afternoon to celebrate the start of Arizona's 100th year of basketball were treated with a surprise when a new face stole the show.

Walk-on guard Beau Muhlbach amazed the more than 4,800 in attendance ÷ as well as his coaches ÷ by pouring in 36 points during Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage. [Read article]

photo Soccer ends winless skid against ASU

The upstart Arizona soccer team bettered Arizona State in virtually every statistical category possible ÷ except for the stat that matters most.

Over 600 UA and ASU faithful looked on as the Wildcats and the No. 24 Sun Devils played to a 1-1 double-overtime deadlock Saturday night at Murphey Stadium.

photo Volleyball: Wildcats sweep Beavers, Ducks

After registering just 11 kills Thursday, Arizona sophomore Kim Glass wasn't happy with her performance against Oregon.

The outside hitter decided to get even the following night against Oregon State.

Glass led the Wildcats (9-10, 3-6 Pacific 10 Conference) to a straight-set win over the visiting Beavers (12-9, 2-7) on Friday by posting a school-record 30 kills, breaking the three-game mark she set last year in the first round of the NCAA tournament, when she had 28 kills against Texas-Arlington. Football Roundup: Hill withdraws name from candidate list

Fresno State head football coach Pat Hill, considered a front-runner for the Arizona football head-coaching vacancy, pulled himself out of the running, a release from the FSU athletics department said Friday.

According to the release, Hill notified UA officials late last week that he is withdrawing his name from consideration for the opening.

"I'm excited about the future of Bulldog Football," Hill said in the statement. "I am not ÷ nor am I going to be ÷ a candidate for any opening anytime soon." [Read article]

Men's tennis finishes 6-3, 0-1 in Texas tourneyMIDLAND, Texas ÷ Members of the Arizona men's tennis team completed play at the Midland Collegiate Classic Saturday, finishing the weekend with an overall record of 6-3 in singles and 0-1 in doubles.

In third-round singles action, UA senior Tom Lloyd fell to Krzysztof Kwinta of UCLA in straight sets, 6-3, 6-5.

Lloyd opened the tournament by downing Rodney Vickers of Texas Tech in the wild-card round, 6-4, 6-0. During first-round action, Lloyd upset top-seed Alejandro Tejerina of Tulsa, 6-3, 3-0 (retired), while dropping Jason Gould of Baylor in round two. [Read article]
