Men's tennis finishes 6-3, 0-1 in Texas tourney
MIDLAND, Texas ÷ Members of the Arizona men's tennis team completed play at the Midland Collegiate Classic Saturday, finishing the weekend with an overall record of 6-3 in singles and 0-1 in doubles.
In third-round singles action, UA senior Tom Lloyd fell to Krzysztof Kwinta of UCLA in straight sets, 6-3, 6-5.
Lloyd opened the tournament by downing Rodney Vickers of Texas Tech in the wild-card round, 6-4, 6-0. During first-round action, Lloyd upset top-seed Alejandro Tejerina of Tulsa, 6-3, 3-0 (retired), while dropping Jason Gould of Baylor in round two.
Junior Colin O'Grady lost to Matija Zgaga of Baylor, 6-1, 6-1 after posting victories in the first and second round over Jason Zimmerman of Duke and Brett Joelson of Texas Tech, respectively.
Lloyd's loss drops him to 5-2 overall, while O'Grady falls to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore Roger Matalonga bowed out in the second round, falling to Alberto Francis of UCLA. Matalonga won his first-round match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, against Chris Brown of Duke. Matalonga also fell to 5-2 overall.
O'Grady and Lloyd fell in their first doubles match to Baylor's duo of Gould and Martiji Zgaga, 8-5.
The Wildcats will travel to Los Angeles to compete in their next tournament, the Omni Hotel Southern California Region VIII Fall Championships, beginning Saturday.
Cheseret takes second at NCAA pre-nationals
WATERLOO, Iowa ÷UA men's cross country finished fifth overall, with the Wildcat women placing 19th at the NCAA pre-nationals, an event hosted by Northern Iowa.
Arizona freshman Robert Cheseret once again led the way for the men, finishing second in 23:19.6. Cheseret finished less than two seconds behind Dathan Ritzenhein of Colorado.
The second Wildcat to cross the line for the men was junior Jonah Maiyo, who covered the 8,000-meter course in 23:50 to claim ninth place overall. Senior Kyle Goklish claimed the No. 3 spot for Arizona, finishing 24th overall in 24:08.
Junior Beth Hoge was the top finisher for the UA women's squad, claiming 68th place on the 6,000-meter course. She finished with a time of 21:44.9.
Sophomore Adrienne Goeller finished 94th overall and second for Arizona, clocking a time of 22:01.5. Senior Nicole Gurnicz wasn't too far behind, crossing the line at 22:05.4 in 100th place.
