The weekend was a good news-bad news scenario for UA women's soccer.
The good news: the Wildcats (5-8-2, 1-3-1 Pacific 10 Conference) earned their first conference win of the season, and that win came against a ranked Southern California team (7-6-4, 3-2-1) while on the road.
Sophomore midfielder Mallory Miller drilled a direct free kick from 25 yards out Friday afternoon to give the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over No. 19 USC.
Miller scored in the 19 minute of the game, and the UA defense took care of the rest. The defense stifled 14 shots by USC ÷ including seven on-goal ÷ to walk away with the shutout.
UA goalkeeper Natalie Juarez met the challenge of the aggressive Trojan offense by making seven saves en route to her second complete-game shutout of the season.
The Wildcats had 11 shots against the Trojans, on top of 6 shots on goal.
"What a tough game," said first year UA head coach Dan Tobias after his first Pac-10 victory at the Arizona helm. "USC is such a strong team, physically. They get forwards in the attack so much, and they are just a difficult team to play against because they are so athletic and so strong in the air."
The bad news, however, came later in the weekend, as the Wildcats' good fortune was
short-lived. Arizona was dominated and blanked, 4-0, by the No. 3 Bruins (12-1-3, 5-0-1) yesterday at Drake Stadium, on the heart of the UCLA campus in Westwood, Calif.
The Bruins are now a perfect 10-0 against the Wildcats all-time.
Bruin forward Iris Mora scored the first goal for UCLA in the 13 minute. Midfielder Whitney Jones followed shortly after with a goal off a penalty kick the 17th minute.
The Bruins continued their domination when Bristyn Davis put UCLA up 3-0. Kim Devine added another with just 42 seconds remaining in the match.
UCLA out-shot UA 22-6 overall, and had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
UA freshman forward Lauren Winters had two shots on goal, while Miller, junior forward Candice Wilks, redshirt sophomore forward Kelly Nelson and freshman forward/midfielder Erin Bevacqua all tallied one shot on goal for the Wildcats.
"There's a reason why UCLA is the No. 3 team in the country," Tobias said. "They are a good team loaded with high-quality players."
UA goalkeeper Natalie Juarez accumulated seven saves in the UCLA match.
Up next for the Wildcats are Oregon and Oregon State this weekend at Murphey Stadium ÷ the team's final home games of the 2003 season.
