UA sophomore Daniel Andrus pushed his way past an early first round defeat through quarterfinal action of the Omni Hotel Region VIII South Fall Championships in Carson, Calif. before bowing out in the semifinals.
After falling in first round action to sixth-seed Johan Berg of Southern California on Wednesday, Andrus fought his way back through the tournament's back draw, earning victories of Jon Endrikat of UC Irvine and Nic Beuque of San Diego on the way.
Andrus won his quarterfinal match over Daniel Jung of San Diego State on Saturday before falling to Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to complete the UA's participation in the tournament.
Ninth-seeded senior Tom Lloyd and junior Colin O'Grady were Arizona's only first-round winners, with Senior Carl Hagman, junior Paul Warkentin and sophomore Roger Matalonga joining Andrus on the losing end in the round of 64.
Lloyd fell 6-0 to Drew Hoskins of USC in second-round competition before pulling out of the tournament due to an injury.
The duo of Andrus and Warkentin also managed to make it to quarterfinal action of the doubles draw before falling the third-seeded team of Scott Doerner and Calle Hansen of Pepperdine.
