The No. 34 Arizona men's tennis team got a well-deserved victory Friday.

After being cooped up in a California hotel last weekend, the Wildcats took out their frustration on up-and-coming No. 26 ASU 5-2.

"The guys were due for a good win," said Arizona assistant coach Tad Berkowitz. "They were intense, and they needed to be."

Senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga defeated ASU's Andy Colombo and Jonathan Kinsella, 8-6.

Junior Tim Mullane and freshman Claudio Christen defeated the Sun Devils' Christopher Biro and Nick Hegarty, 8-5.

ASU's Clinton Letcher and Mike Beatty defeated junior Daniel Andrus and freshman Bruno Alcala 8-9 (2-7).

O'Grady, a Phoenix native, played the No. 1 singles spot and did not disappoint, defeating ASU's Biro 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

No. 58 Matalonga playing the two spot and played it well, defeating the Sun Devils' Colombo 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Jason Labrosse, who is playing his first year at the collegiate level after redshirting last season, fought his way through a tough match against ASU's Hegarty, winning 4-6, 7-6, 10-7.

"You know what you're going to get with Jason," Berkowitz said. "He leaves it all on the court."

Arizona plays again Thursday at No. 50 University of San Diego (0-3).

Women lose close match to Oregon

The No. 47 Arizona women's team suffered a tough loss against No. 25 Oregon Friday, 4-3.

Arizona seniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands scored the only doubles point for the Wildcats, defeating Oregon's No. 15 squad of Dominika Dieskova and Daria Panova, 8-6.

Arizona's other doubles teams weren't quite as ready.

Senior Kelly Perry and junior Stephanie Balzert were narrowly defeated by Oregon's Jamie Marshall and Anna Leksinska 6-8, and sophomore Jessie Rochefort and freshman Camelia Todorova were defeated by the Ducks' Ester Bak and Davina Mendiburu 4-8.

In singles play, No. 33 Hollands gained a victory against No. 86 Dieskova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Mlakar, who played on court one, lost to Oregon's Panova 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.

Sophomore Kasia Jakowlew suffered a tough loss to Oregon's Leksinska 4-6, 5-7, giving Oregon the victory.

"Anytime you lose close to a Top 25 team, it hurts," Maes said. "The girls fought hard, (it) just didn't go our way when they had to."

Arizona (5-3, 0-1) plays again Friday against No. 1 Stanford.
