photo Men's Hoops: Arizona rises again in rankings

Another crazy weekend in college basketball saw six teams in the top 10 falter, leaving room for the Arizona men's basketball team (25-4, 15-3 Pacific 10 Conference) to sneak back into the top 10, currently situated at No. 8 in both the AP poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Wildcats were ranked No. 11 last week after a loss to Washington behind the Huskies, but an unexpected loss to Stanford by those Huskies sent them reeling back to No. 14. [Read article]

Some teams in the Pacific 10 Conference squeaked in the back door to the men's basketball conference tournament and know that they must win the tourney to get in the door to the Big Dance the following weekend.

Other teams in the Pac-10, like No. 8 Arizona, have one of the top seeds in the conference tournament and a NCAA berth on the way regardless of the tournament outcome.

For the Wildcats, a win in the 2005 Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament in Los Angeles, which runs tomorrow through Sunday, could be the difference between a No. 1 and a No. 2 seed for the NCAA tournament. [Read article]

Men's Hoops: Five things Cats must do to reach Final Four

Almost any team in the nation's top 10 has a checklist of things that need to happen in order to get them to St. Louis for the Final Four and the Arizona men's basketball team is no exception.

5) Channing Frye makes his presence known in the paint.

OK, so we lost during the Washington trip, where the senior center Frye was obviously the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week (ask Lute Olson). [Read article]

photo Swim 'warrior' leads way

With the NCAA championships a week away, Arizona head swimming and diving coach Frank Busch knows he has a clutch swimmer in junior Marshi Smith.

"She's a quiet warrior," he said.

According to Busch, Smith is the go-to swimmer in high-pressure, high-stakes meets, always performing her best at big meets.

Smith made an impact at the 2005 Pacific 10 Conference swimming championships on Feb. 26, taking the title in the 100-yard backstroke. [Read article]

photo Men's Tennis: Wildcats roar louder than Tigers

The Arizona men's tennis team is back at home and back on the winning track.

The No. 42 Wildcats (7-4) defeated the Memphis Tigers 6-1 yesterday at Robson Tennis Center.

The Wildcats' one-two punch of senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga, the No. 22 doubles team in the country, started off the match defeating Memphis' Scott Felsenthal and James Spence, 8-5.

Arizona freshman Claudio Christen and junior Tim Mullane defeated the Tigers' Alex Jago and Mark Finnegan, 8-6. [Read article]

The No. 49 Arizona women's tennis team is energized and ready to go.

After two disappointing matches over the weekend, Arizona (5-5, 0-1) plays its in-state rival, the No. 28 ASU Sun Devils (3-3, 1-2) today at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center at 1 p.m.

"We have a strong chance of beating them," said senior Kelly Perry. "We've had a good record against them in the past."

Perry, who graduates in May, said she would love to beat them one last time before she does in fact graduate. [Read article]

photo Athlete Of The Week: Jerz vaulting towards national championship

Senior pole-vaulter Connie Jerz has been an imposing force for the Arizona track and field team this season, posting an impressive automatic-qualifying mark of 13 feet, 10 inches during the early part of the indoor season. Finishing runner up during last year's National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor National Championships, Jerz has her sights set on one thing for this upcoming weekend: winning. Jerz spent some time with the Wildcat after practice to discuss everything from the Olympics to Old Spice deodorant. [Read article]
