Two UA football players were diverted to the Dean of Students Office last Wednesday after one lied to police and the other was caught with marijuana.
According to reports, Gilbert Harris and Yaniv Barnett were sitting on the top level of the Sixth Street Garage, 1201 E. Sixth St., when police saw them and smelled burnt marijuana.
As police approached, Barnett threw something over his shoulder, reports stated.
Barnett, an undeclared freshman, first told police he had dropped a lighter, but police found a baggie of marijuana directly below where Barnett and Harris were sitting. Barnett later admitted it was his.
Barnett said he and Harris had not been smoking the marijuana, reports stated.
Harris, a family studies and human development junior, first told police his name was Gilbert J. Kendal and said he wasn't a football player.
Harris then said, "My real last name is Harris, with a middle initial of L," reports stated.
Harris was referred to the Dean of Students Office for lying, while Barnett was referred for possession of marijuana.
According to an Arizona Daily Star report on Nov. 1, 2003, Harris was suspended for the remainder of the season last year for undisclosed reasons.
Harris is listed as the back-up fullback, but has also seen time at running back. He had three carries for seven yards in the Wildcats' 21-3 win over Northern Arizona Saturday. Harris played eight games last season, including three starts.
Barnett is a freshman defensive tackle who has yet to see playing time with the team. He joined the team this fall out of Cibolo, Texas.
The athletics department did not comment on whether Barnett and Harris will face disciplinary action.
