Baseball sweeps UCLA on road
In its first conference road trip of the season, No. 10 Arizona battered UCLA on the way to its first conference road sweep since 1999.
Junior first baseman Jordan Brown's grand slam in the Wildcats' 8-4 win Friday, junior Kevin Guyette's one-hitter in Saturday's 11-0 shutout, and freshman Eric Berger's 5 2/3 hitless innings of relief in yesterday's 12-2 win led to the sweep at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.

Men's Hoops: LMU tabs Tention as head coach
Miles Simon, Reggie Geary could take spot
Arizona men's basketball assistant coach Rodney Tention said yesterday he has accepted the head coaching job at Loyola Marymount and will officially announce his acceptance tomorrow.
While attending the Final Four in St. Louis, Tention said he received a phone call from LMU athletic director William Husak, who offered Tention the job.
"This was no April Fool's joke," Tention said. "I'm really happy. It was a real emotional time because this has been a goal in life for me."

Softball: Cats take 2 of 3 from Golden Bears
Walk-off slam in 7th caps Saturday victory
A third comeback wasn't in the cards yesterday for the No. 2 Arizona softball team.
Alicia Hollowell gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings before being pulled for junior Leslie Wolfe, and the Wildcats (28-3, 2-1 Pacific 10 Conference) fell 6-3 to No. 3 California at Hillenbrand Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 2,107.

UA Football: Stoops pleased with weekend scrimmage
The Arizona football team took to Arizona Stadium for the first time in 2005 Saturday in a full-contact scrimmage, the first of three such practices open to the public this spring.
Head coach Mike Stoops said he was pleased with the team's performance, particularly on the offensive end.
"The offense did well and executed. Adam Austin and B.J. Vickers did well today," he said.
The junior quarterback Austin and junior transfer wide receiver Vickers complemented each other, connecting five times for 60 yards.

UA men sweep 110-meter hurdles at home meet
Jeff Hunter is back, and that's not good news for the rest of the Pacific 10 Conference.
Hunter, along with fellow hurdlers Dan Cook and Jake Arnold, swept the men's 110-meter hurdles at Saturday's Arizona International meet at Drachman Stadium.
Both Hunter and Cook qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships May 27-28 in Eugene, Ore., with times of 14.18 and 14.22, respectively.
Hunter, a junior who is recovering from an injury suffered early in the indoor season, is just now starting to regain his strength, Arizona head coach Fred Harvey said.

Men's Tennis: Freshmen huge in win over Cal
At least one person thinks the No. 47 Arizona men's tennis team should feel good about itself after its weekend performance.
"They did a good job," said Arizona assistant coach Tad Berkowitz.
Arizona (8-9, 1-3 Pacific 10 Conference) lost to No. 16 Stanford (10-7, 2-1) 4-3 Saturday, but beat No. 36 California (7-9, 1-2) 5-2 Friday.
Arizona started the match strong against Stanford, taking the doubles point away from the Cardinal at home for the first time in four years.

Women's tennis loses tough road matches
Senior Kelly Perry gets elusive win vs. Stanford
The No. 49 Arizona women's tennis team, caught in the middle of its toughest two weeks of the year, did not bode well in Northern California.
Having to face No. 17 California and No. 1 Stanford, after facing No. 12 UCLA and No. 5 USC is not easy, no matter how good a team you are.
Arizona (6-10, 0-5 Pacific 10 Conference) faced the defending national champion Cardinal (15-0, 4-0) Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.

Women's golf finishes fourth in Tempe event
The Arizona women's golf team shot at even-par yesterday to finish the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe in fourth place on the event's final day.
The Wildcats finished 21 strokes behind champion ASU. The Sun Devils and UCLA ended tied in the three-day event, but the title was given to the Sun Devils in a tie-breaker.
"We got off to a good start today," said Arizona head coach Greg Allen. "Just like I've said before, we feel like when all the girls play well, we are successful. This is great momentum going into the Pac-10 Championships."
