At least one person thinks the No. 47 Arizona men's tennis team should feel good about itself after its weekend performance.

"They did a good job," said Arizona assistant coach Tad Berkowitz.

Arizona (8-9, 1-3 Pacific 10 Conference) lost to No. 16 Stanford (10-7, 2-1) 4-3 Saturday, but beat No. 36 California (7-9, 1-2) 5-2 Friday.

Arizona started the match strong against Stanford, taking the doubles point away from the Cardinal at home for the first time in four years.

The Wildcats' No. 15 team of senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga faced the No. 3 doubles team of K.C. Corkery and Sam Warburg, losing 8-5.

Senior Paul Warkentin and junior Daniel Andrus defeated Phil Sheng and Jon Wong, 8-5 and freshman duo Bruno Alcala and Claudio Christen defeated Stanford's Eric McKean and James Wan by the same margin to give the Wildcats the victory.

In singles play, things didn't go as smoothly for Arizona.

With the momentum swung in their favor, the Wildcats lost their swagger and some early points on courts one, two and three to get behind early.

O'Grady faced the No. 2 tennis player in the country in Warburg. O'Grady played him tough all match before bowing out 6-4, 6-4.

No. 47 Matalonga faced No. 33 Corkery on court two, going down 6-4, 6-2.

Warkentin, playing on court three, fell behind early against Wan, 5-1.

Warkentin squared the match at five each before running out of gas and losing the first set 7-5. Wan took the second set 6-3.

Andrus faced Stanford's Sheng, a match Andrus wasn't particularly looking forward to.

"He's a cocky ass who whines a lot," Andrus said.

In a back-and-forth match, Sheng ended up winning, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

The Arizona freshmen dominated on courts four and five.

Alcala took care of McKean 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3, while Jason Labrosse beat Stanford's Phil Kao 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

On Friday, Arizona took it to the Golden Bears.

O'Grady and Matalonga took care of the No. 11 team of Connor Niland and Patrick Briaud, 8-6.

Warkentin and Andrus lost to Dean Wallace and Lennart Maack, 9-8 (7-4).

Freshmen Alcala and Claudio beat Cal's Dan Sebescen and Ken Nakahara, 8-6, on court three to win the doubles point for the Wildcats.

In singles play, O'Grady took on Cal's No. 19 Niland. O'Grady, showing his grit and will as the team captain, gave Niland all he could handle before falling off, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

No. 47 Matalonga took on No. 59 Maack, winning 6-3, 7-5.

Warkentin started off slow against Briaud, but caught fire to win the first set 6-3. The match went two sets, 7-6 (8-6), before Warkentin lost 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.

Andrus, who showed little signs of a previous foot problem, took care of Cal's Sebescen, 6-3, 6-2.

Alcala and Labrosse took care of Nakahara, 6-4, 6-4, and John Pettit, 6-2, 6-2, respectively.

"The freshmen are doing a fantastic job," Warkentin said. "We've needed them to step up in the past and now, and they've answered the call every time."

Berkowitz said he is proud of Claudio, Alcala and Labrosse, as well as the rest of the team for their play over the weekend.

"We came out with a positive attitude," Berkowitz said. "We were focused and got a huge Pac-10 win."

Arizona travels to play Washington and Oregon this weekend.
