Arizona softball head coach Mike Candrea was honored at Hillenbrand Stadium yesterday for reaching the 1,000 career victories mark March 13 against North Carolina State.

In his speech at the brief ceremony, Candrea didn't go back too far in the team's prestigious history to recall some significant wins that stick out to him.

"The best two victories we've had are these last two," he said with a smile.

Candrea got wins 1,012 and 1,013 over the weekend, sweeping Oregon (23-13, 3-4 Pacific 10 Conference) with a pair of 8-1 victories yesterday and Saturday.

While perhaps not Candrea's biggest wins, they came in a weekend when the Wildcats (31-4, 5-2) seemed to find offense that they had at the start of Pac-10 play.

"Just to put a weekend together like this feels awesome," said junior second baseman Shelly Schultz. "We just have to take it and go with it."

Schultz emerged from some offensive troubles of her own, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

She ripped a double up the middle to give Arizona a 5-1 lead and hit an RBI single in the next inning.

Schultz entered yesterday hitting .221, with just three extra base hits.

UA softball coach Mike Candrea received an award yesterday for attaining his 1,000th career victory last month.

"I knew it was there, I knew it was going to come," she said of her offensive production. "I'm just glad it's finally here."

Senior third baseman Jackie Coburn hit her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field wall, to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

After starting eight straight games, junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell finally got a start off, courtesy of freshman Taryne Mowatt.

Mowatt went five innings in her Pac-10 debut, striking out nine and giving up five hits with no walks.

Oregon's four through nine batters had only two hits in the game, both by second baseman Erin Goodell.

The only Oregon run came in the first inning, when first baseman Beth Boskovich singled up the middle to score Breanne Sabol from second base.

"She started off a little shaky. She seemed to settle down. It was a tremendous effort on her part," assistant coach Larry Ray said of Mowatt.

"I went out there and threw what I could and kept them off balance," Mowatt said.

Hollowell finished off the game for Mowatt, giving up one hit and striking out four in two innings.

Saturday, Hollowell gave up one run on five hits and struck out four for the victory, notching her 1,200th career strikeout.

Oregon's only run of the game came in the fourth inning, when Boskovich doubled past a diving Schultz to score left fielder Lovena Chaput.

Hollowell got out of a bases loaded jam the following inning to preserve a 2-1 lead.

Arizona followed with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double by freshman catcher Callista Balko to score Schultz and Coburn who both walked to lead off the inning.

Candrea lifted junior left fielder Autumn Champion, one of the team's best contact hitters, for senior Jen Martinez in the next inning.

The move paid off, as Martinez belted a grand slam over the right field wall, her first career homer.

Arizona lost their second Pac-10 game of the year Friday night, falling to No. 13 Oregon State (28-6, 7-0) 1-0.

The game was deadlocked until the top of the sixth inning.

Hollowell gave up consecutive one-out singles, and both runners moved to second and third, respectively, after the junior's wild pitch.

She then gave up a walk to first baseman Vanessa Iapala to load the bases and threw another wild pitch to score shortstop Mia Longfellow from third.

The Wildcats had five hits and left six runners on base.

The Beavers won their 20th straight game this season and extended their win streak to 22 games with a sweep of ASU over the weekend, 8-1 Saturday and 3-1 yesterday.
