Last week the No. 6 Arizona baseball team swept a Pacific 10 Conference road series for the first time in six years.

The Wildcats swept another Pac-10 road series over the weekend, taking three against Washington State in Pullman with a 13-10 victory yesterday.

Arizona (24-10, 8-1 Pac-10) has eight wins in its first nine conference games for the first time in school history.

"When you look at how dominant Arizona has been in the past, with the juniors we have, we knew we needed to set the tempo to get the program back to the nation's elite, and I think we've done this," junior catcher Nick Hundley said. "We've set the bar for Arizona baseball."

After falling behind in the conference race and finishing fifth last season, Arizona leads No. 16 Oregon State (26-5, 5-1) by 1 1/2 games and No. 10 Stanford (19-11, 4-2) by 2 1/2 games.

"It's always good to get ahead and jump on the rest of the competition," junior first baseman Jordan Brown said. "For once we're not chasing anyone else. It gives us momentum into the next series."

WSU (16-20, 0-9) has lost 11 of 12 games and remains winless in the conference.

Arizona won yesterday behind two four-run innings and dominant relief from sophomore closer Mark Melancon (2-2), after the Cougars jumped out to an 8-3 lead after three innings.

"Nobody panicked," Hundley said. "Everybody knew there was lot of game left to play, and we played the way we should down the stretch"

Trailing 9-5 in the sixth, the Wildcat bats got to work.

Brown's two-run single highlighted a four-run sixth in which three runs scored after WSU recorded two outs with no runners on base.

Arizona took the lead for good with four runs in the seventh on just two hits after the Cougars committed two errors and two balks.

Freshman second baseman Bryan Kervin got the go-ahead RBI-double before the Wildcats tacked three more runs on to the scoreboard.

"We never give up. We're a really resilient team," said Brown, who was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. "It doesn't matter what happens, it's how you finish, not how you start."

Melancon finished the deal, retiring the first seven batters he faced on the way to the win. He allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings to secure the sweep.

"He's a dominant guy," Hundley said. "He's our ace in the hole. When he goes in everybody knows the game has a real good chance of being over."

Junior left fielder Trevor Crowe went 3-for-5 with two runs, finishing the series 9-for-14.

Junior Kevin Guyette (6-2) earned his second-straight complete game victory in Saturday's 7-4 win.

After allowing a fourth-inning home run to second baseman Jeff Miller that gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead, Guyette allowed only one hit over the final 5 1/3 innings, retiring the last 11 batters.

Guyette gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out eight.

Hundley answered Miller's shot with a solo home run of his own to tie the game in the fifth.

The Wildcats took the lead for good in the sixth on junior third baseman Brad Boyer's single that brought in Kervin.

The Wildcats opened the series in dominant fashion in their 13-0 win Friday.

Junior John Meloan (6-0) pitched eight shutout innings for the win while the offense supplied plenty of support.

Meloan won his 16th consecutive decision, striking out seven while allowing four hits and three walks.

"When you can come out and only use two pitchers the first two nights it's amazing," Hundley said. "Those two guys have been horses."

The Wildcats now turn their attention to the Beavers. Oregon State took two out of three at Stanford over the weekend and comes to Tucson this week for a showdown for first place in the conference.

"We're definitely already talking about it now," Hundley said. "We're going to celebrate this victory (yesterday) and, come Monday, get ready to play a quality Oregon State team."
