ASU squeaks by men's tennis

The Arizona men's tennis team fell to ASU 4-3 in a comeback win for the Sun Devils Saturday at the Robson Tennis Center.

The Wildcats took three of the first four singles matches after losing the doubles point for the third meet in a row.

Seniors Colin O'Grady and Roger Matalonga and junior Daniel Andrus earned singles wins for Arizona.

O'Grady beat No. 122 Clint Letcher, while No. 55 Matalonga took care of Andy Colombo.

The Wildcats needed one win with two matches remaining to clinch the victory but could not close out the Sun Devils.

This was O'Grady's last match in Tucson. He compiled a 58-51 mark in his four years, including a 36-20 mark over the last two seasons.

Arizona heads to Ojai, Calif., for the Pacific 10 Conference Championships set to take place Thursday through Sunday.

Women's tennis falls to Sun Devils

The Arizona women's tennis team closed out its regular season with a 5-2 loss to No. 24 ASU Saturday in Tempe.

The Wildcats jumped on the Sun Devils early, winning the doubles point, but were only able to collect one more point in singles play.

Seniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar knocked off the No. 21 doubles team of Kady Pooler and Lauren Colalillo.

In the teams' last meeting, the Wildcats lost the doubles point before splitting the six singles points.

Saturday's match was a different story, as senior Kelly Perry was the lone Wildcat winner in individual play.

Arizona begins the Pacific 10 Conference Championships Thursday in Ojai, Calif.

Swim's Busch named Coach of the Year

Arizona swimming and diving head coach Frank Busch was named the 2005 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Busch, who also won the award in 2004, 2000 and 1998, led the women's team to third place at the NCAA Championships March 17-19.

The women's team, which finished the year ranked sixth in the nation, placed second at the Pac-10 Championships Feb. 23-26.

The men's team ended the year ranked eighth.

Men's golf tied for seventh in Palo Alto

The Arizona men's golf team finished in a tie for seventh yesterday in the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Wildcats shot a 25-over-par and are joined by four other teams in the seven spot.

Sophomore Josh Esler leads Arizona tied at 23rd at 5-over-par.

Arizona managed only two even-par rounds in the event and trails Southern California by 23 strokes.

The tournament concludes tomorrow.

Women's golf starts postseason at Pac-10 Championships

The No. 16 Arizona women's golf team travels to Pleasanton, Calif., today for the 2005 Pac-10 Championships.

The Wildcats took fourth place at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe April 1-3.

Junior Cassandra Kirkland (7-over 223) tied in 16th place, joining junior Lani Elston (8-over 224) in the individual top 25.

Kirkland, who completed her fifth top-25 showing of the year in Tempe, has four top-10 finishes in nine events this season.

The field for the tournament includes every Pac-10 team, including No. 2 UCLA, No. 5 ASU and No. 9 Washington.

"We feel like we are really close to playing at our best," said Arizona head coach Greg Allen in a press release on the Arizona athletics Web site. "All five starters have had their best rounds of the year at some point during the last three tournaments.

"UCLA will be the heavy favorite to defend their title, but I believe that if our young ladies play the way they can, we can beat anyone in the country."

The tournament, set to take place at Ruby Hills Golf Club, a par-72, 6,315-yard course, tees off at 8 a.m. today. It runs through Wednesday.
