Penguin's hopes to raise $35,000 for Red Cross

Ice cream patrons can contribute to a local fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina tomorrow just by purchasing a frozen yogurt.

Penguin's Frozen Yogurt Place will donate all of tomorrow's proceeds to the American Red Cross for the hurricane relief efforts, said co-owner Brad Freeborn.

Both locations, 825 E. University Blvd. and 3175 N. Campbell Ave., will host the fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., with the goal to raise $3,500 in donations, Freeborn said.

Along with donations from their patrons, Freeborn and Penguin's CEO Dana Hall has asked their employees to voluntarily contribute their earnings from tomorrow's fundraiser to the total donation, Freeborn said.

"I know college students have limited funds, but we have to give as much as we can," said Freeborn, who is a college student.

While Penguin's has never donated an entire day's worth of proceeds to a fundraiser, Hall said she is confident with the right support from students and the community the $3,500 goal isn't unattainable.

Penguin's employee Greg Bouton said he will contribute his day's earnings to the donation because he has family friends who were directly affected by Hurricane Katrina, and he wants to help in any way he can.

"I have family in Louisiana. No one in my family was directly affected, but we have friends who were, and I want to do anything to help," said Bouton, an industrial engineering junior.

Poetry night and drive hosted by Phi Beta Sigma

Grab your sheet music, poems and song lyrics for tonight's open mic poetry night hosted by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Phi Beta Sigma is hosting its "Words from the Soul" poetry night tonight in the Cellar restaurant in the Student Union Memorial Center at 7:14.

This 11-year tradition has been one of its most popular events, attracting the biggest turnout of all of their events in years past, said fraternity historian Kyle Harris.

The poetry night is an opportunity for attendees to get to know one another and share their work with an audience, said President Gerard Kimbuende.

Because the event is so popular, the fraternity tries to host open mics on a monthly basis, said Harris, a nutritional sciences junior.

Along with tonight's event, Phi Beta Sigma is also hosting a drive and fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina tomorrow outside of Al's Barber Shop, 861 E. Grant Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The men are asking for donations of money, clothing, hygiene items, toiletries and food to be donated to The American Red Cross, said Skyler Miles, the fraternity's secretary.

Guests from the local record label Family First Entertainment will be with them, and they hope to have personalities from the radio station 98.3 FM, said Miles, a music junior.
