Students with a gambling bug can lay their chips on the table tonight in Wilbur's Underground.

The Games Room, located in Wilbur's Underground in the Student Union Memorial Center, is now hosting poker tournaments and renting tables to poker players.

The poker tables and chips can be rented for $10 an hour.

Wednesdays are tournament nights, and sign up starts at 2 p.m. With a $10 entry fee students will play against each other to find the top player on campus.

The Games Room has two poker tables, but depending on the response of students, which has been strong so far, up to four more could be added.

Each week's winners will receive gift cards, game cartridges or other merchandise from Best Buy.

Players will be tracked throughout the semester on a ladder system, and at the end of the semester the top players will face off in an invitation-only game of No Limit Texas Hold 'Em to find the UA's best poker player.

The grand prize has not yet been determined, but game room manager Simran Nirh said he hopes to collaborate with the union's future music store to determine a final prize.

"Because of all the interest in poker right now, we think we will get a great turnout," said Chris Perling, manager's assistant for the Games Room.

Northern Arizona University and many other universities and colleges across the country are already offering poker in their game rooms.

Nirh said he plans to send players to the Association of College Unions International competition. The UA has participated in the association's competitions for billiards and ping pong.

"Basically we sponsor some of the best students at the UA and will go to the regional tournament. If we win there, then we go to nationals," Nirh said.

The Games Room is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
