Three shot Friday

Three people in their 20s were shot near Maloney's Bar, a popular college hangout, early Friday morning after a confrontation broke out behind the building.

Two separate shootings also took place that morning shortly after bars closed. A conflict at Maloney's, 213 N. Fourth Ave., turned into a shooting behind the bar at North Herbert Avenue and East Seventh Street shortly after the bar closed at 2 a.m.

Michael Zepeda, 22, was taken to University Medical Center after the shooting for life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Marco Borboa, Tucson Police Department spokesman. Zepeda was in stable condition yesterday morning, but last night a UMC public information officer said she could not find his records, which means he was released. [Read article]

Last week's election proved one thing: No matter how bad the issues facing our country become, nothing will motivate many Americans to act in our democracy quite like the fear of seeing boys kissing boys. In a time when the economy has been struggling, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening, health care costs are skyrocketing, and more than 1,100 troops have died in Iraq, apparently "moral values" are most important in voting for our president. Soccer wins 1st Pac-10 crown

The No. 10 UA soccer team's quest for its first conference title may have taken a few detours during the final weekend of league play, but the Wildcats still managed to finish right on course and are now the newest leaders of the Pac-10.

Arizona (15-5, 6-3 Pacific 10 Conference) finished its regular season with a share of its first-ever Pac-10 Championship, after the Wildcats registered a 2-0 victory over Oregon (3-13, 0-7-2) in Eugene, Ore., yesterday afternoon. [Read article]

Carousels remind most of us of childhood days at the carnival and fighting with siblings over who got to ride which animal. However, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel," - which will be put on by the Arizona Repertory Theatre - does not follow traditional musical styles when it touches on much deeper and realistic issues.

"It's a dark story. The lead character is a wife-beater. It's about where relationships can go and how people can redeem themselves," said director and theatre arts professor Harold Dixon.  [ Read article]
