TEMPE - The three state university presidents voiced their support for more tuition hikes Friday, but said predictable tuition increases over time could be a risk due to uncertainty in the external market.

At the Arizona Board of Regents meeting at Arizona State University, regents discussed a proposal to make tuition increases predictable every four years so families could budget their finances. In McKale, Cougs snap 38-game losing streak to Wildcats

It was a short stay at the top of the Pacific 10 Conference standings, as Washington State defeated the No. 11 Arizona men's basketball team 70-63 in McKale Center Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (9-9, 4-5) have now defeated two of the top three teams in the Pac-10 - Stanford and Arizona. They defeated Stanford in Pullman, Wash., Dec. 31, 60-51.

"I just think people didn't take this game seriously. I think Washington State wanted to win more than we did," said UA senior center Channing Frye. [Read article]

It is difficult not to be leery about the notion of fighting wars for ideas rather than objectives. The military is a lethal instrument, and it is supposed to be exactly that. U.S. forces are best used to accomplish clear, unambiguous missions and wars are best fought to achieve concrete objectives, not abstract ideals. However, after the rationale for invading Iraq in order to disarm Saddam Hussein of weapons of mass destruction proved erroneous, we are left with precisely that - a war for an idea.
