The Arizona baseball team's young guns carried the Wildcats once again last night in their first road win of the year in as many tries.
No. 20 UA defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-1 yesterday, courtesy of three TAMUCC errors.
Wildcat freshman Will Miller pitched six strong innings and yielded one run on five hits with no walks.
UA sophomore second baseman Moises Duran went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Duran also made a sensational diving defensive play to his left on a ground ball.
The 5-foot-8 sophomore, who batted fifth in the lineup, said he was pleased with his effort on both sides.
"I was seeing the ball real well tonight and I wanted to put a good bat on the ball," Duran said. "Lately, I've been making defensive errors but tonight I thought I did well."
The Wildcats (11-1) opened the game with a two-out, two-run rally in the first inning.
Later in the inning, freshman designated hitter Rich Mercado doubled to left-center to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Senior catcher Chris Cunningham then singled home Mercado. Cunningham advanced to third on Duran's single to center and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
UA added a run in the fifth inning when Duran singled home freshman right fielder Jeff Van Houten, and added another run in the seventh on a bases-loaded RBI walk by freshman first baseman Will Thompson.
TAMUCC (4-3) scored their lone run in the first on an RBI groundout to second by junior second baseman Hector Granzuay.
UA senior Kevin Sears pitched two innings in relief and sophomore Tony Sulser pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the year.
Arizona won its fifth consecutive game between the two schools. UA head coach Andy Lopez said he was still unhappy with his team leaving 12 runners on the base paths.
"We came out on top, but we are going to get better and improve," Lopez said.
Arizona will move onto College Station, Texas, to open a three game series against the Texas A&M Aggies tomorrow.
