Cats sprint to high altitude for in-state matchup at NAU

After an impressive performance last week in the land of Lincoln, the Wildcats hope to carry that momentum into this week's tri-meet against in-state rivals Arizona State and NAU.

The Lumberjacks will host the annual meet in the Skydome starting Thursday at 4 p.m.

Although this has been a good year so far for Arizona's track and field, the Wildcats aren't treating this meet any different from their previous two.

"Since it's in-state, we'd like to do well. But we're using this week to prepare for next week's conference championship," said Murray. "We'd like to get a few more qualified for next week, so marks will be the most important thing for us this week."

ASU has been performing well this year and as perennial champs of the Big Sky conference, NAU may have a slight advantage since it is more acclimated to the altitude.

Coming off a stellar performance last week by the No. 2 Wildcat women's team and a men's squad that is improving every week, Murray is confident his athletes will continue to improve.

Brianna Glenn hopes to continue her dominance in the 60-m and the 200-m while improving her long jump.

After last week's performance, Glenn said she felt she needed to work on her long-jump score.

"(Last week), there was some good and some bad," Glenn said. "I was satisfied with the way I ran, but I'd like to improve on the long jump."

New NCAA record holder Amy Linnen hopes to continue vaulting her way to the championships. After an impressive mark of 14-10 in the pole vault, she's already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-9.

On the men's side, Murray will look for Mike Kenyon to repeat his performance in the 200m and 400m. Kenyon provisionally qualified for the championships last week with a time of 21.23 in the 200m and a time of 46.95 in the 400m.

Freshman thrower Sean Shields also qualified provisionally last week with a strong showing in the shot put.

Glenn said the team is prepared to improve upon last week.

"Going into the tri-meet we're excited, confident and ready to put down big marks," Glenn said.
