The No. 2 Arizona softball team began its pursuit of a seventh Pacific 10 Conference title last weekend with a two-game sweep of No. 6 Arizona State in Tempe.
The Wildcats (33-4, 2-0 Pac-10) wasted no time yesterday in wrapping up the second win of the series with a score of 10-1. Back-to-back homers by sophomore Leneah Manuma and senior Jennie Finch highlighted a first-inning surge that put UA up to stay at 4-0.
After Wildcat starter Jenny Gladding (14-4) shut out the Sun Devils (30-9, 0-2 Pac-10) in the top of the second, freshman third baseman Jackie Coburn put the game out of reach for good, taking ASU starter Erica Beach (18-6) deep to clear the bases and punctuate a 6-0 Arizona run.
Gladding went three innings, giving up five hits and one run in the victory. Finch pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits.
Friday's 2-0 win wasn't as easy for the Wildcats.
Finch and Beach put on a pitching exhibition, giving up only six runs between them while striking out a combined 15 batters and walking none.
Beach, a senior, took a no-hitter into the sixth, when UA junior shortstop Lovie Jung hit an offering over the center-field fence to break the no-hit bid and the tie.
Gladding finished up the day's scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, bringing home freshman pinch runner Carrie Hagen to make the lead 2-0.
That was all the help Finch (19-0) would need, as she posted a 10-strikeout complete-game shutout, walking none while extending her NCAA-record consecutive-wins streak to 58.
The Wildcats next take the field Friday against Washington at 7 p.m. in Hillenbrand Stadium, followed by a pair of weekend home games against UCLA. Saturday's and Sunday's games both start at 1 p.m.
