A road series that looked promising for the Arizona baseball team after a 13-9 victory over Oregon State on Thursday deteriorated into its second straight series loss when the team posted a total of one run in the second and third games of the series on Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats (21-13, 2-4 Pacific 10 Conference) managed just three hits Saturday in a 5-0 loss, UA's fourth shutout defeat of the season.
UA sophomore starter Marc Kaiser (5-2) fell behind in the first frame, surrendering a two-run homer to OSU's Andy Jarvis.
Beaver second baseman Tom Creighton upped OSU's lead to 4-0 with a solo shot in the fourth. A throwing error by UA junior catcher Ken Riley allowed the final run of the game to score in the seventh inning.
Kaiser, who was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week after two consecutive complete-game wins, gave up five runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.
OSU starter Mark McLemore Jr. went 4.1 innings, striking out four in the winning effort.
In Friday's contest, the two teams took a pitching duel into the bottom half of the ninth, when Creighton took UA reliever Wes Zlotoff's first pitch over the right-field fence to seal the 2-1 Beaver victory.
Senior shortstop Brad Hassey, a Tucson native, and freshman third baseman John Hardy each went 2-4 on the day to lead the Wildcat offense. Hassey and Hardy teamed up to plate the only UA run of the day, which came when Hardy scored on a Hassey single in the third inning.
Arizona sophomore starter Joe Little (5-2) threw seven innings of one-run ball, giving up six hits while striking out six and walking one for the no-decision.
OSU's Stephen Copeland went 5.1 innings, giving up five hits and a walk while striking out five in the win.
The baseball team opens a three-game set against 2001 College World Series runner-up Stanford Friday at 7 p.m. at Sancet Field.
