Club Olympics slides onto the Mall next week

Student clubs will hit the Mall next week to compete in the first annual Club Olympics, which will culminate with an awards presentation at the Spring Fling.

Seven clubs will participate in the event, although Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Jennifer Reece had originally planned for at least 10 clubs to be involved.

At least 70 people from the clubs are expected to be on the Mall participating each day, starting with a spirit day on Monday where clubs will have the opportunity to attract new members.

Tuesday will be the highlight of the Olympics, with clubs competing in am obstacle course from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Mall. Students are free to use the Slip n' Slide and jumping castle once the events are completed.

Finally, clubs will perform in a talent show Wednesday.

"I'm excited to see what they're going to do," Reece said. "I don't really know what to expect."

Clubs will earn points for winning the events, and they can also earn points by handing out tickets for students for next week's Spring Fling.

Although Spring Fling is free for students, clubs earn points if students present the tickets when entering the carnival.

The tickets will later be tabulated.

The winning club will be presented with a trophy Thursday night at Spring Fling, which will be passed on to the victorious club each year.

Next year, the annual competition will be held during Homecoming week, and Reece said she hopes to get a least 20 clubs involved for the next Olympics.

"We're trying to get all the kinks out," she said.

The ASUA senate approved a new Club Events Coordinator last month. That individual will organize the event each year.

Clubs participating this year include the Young Republicans, Chain Gang, Arizona Ambassadors and others.
