It has been more than two weeks since the Wildcats' season came to an end, but that hasn't stopped freshman center Shawntinice Polk from continuing her record setting season.
Yesterday, Polk was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press. Polk became the first freshman in UA history to earn this honor and was the first Wildcat in five years to earn the All-American honor. Adia Barnes was the last Wildcat to do so in the 1997-98 season. Polk also became only the fifth player in the programs history to earn All-America status.
"I'm very excited for her," said head coach Joan Bonvicini. "It's a very prestigious award and it says a lot for not only her, but also for her teammates. I'm proud to be her coach."
In her first game as a Wildcat, she put up 29 points on 13-of-16 from the field and 11 rebounds in an overtime loss to No. 3 Louisiana State.
Throughout the season, Polk set or tied 19 school records on her way to being named Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year. She averaged 17.4 points and 10.8 rebounds a contest to lead the Wildcats in both categories. She amassed 21 double-doubles in 31 games and is the season leader in rebounds in a season (335), blocks (80) and most points by a freshman (538).
"This is just the beginning of a fine career for (Polk)," said Bonvicini.
The Wildcats finished one of their best seasons in the program's history. Although the team was upset in the first round of the NCAA tournament, UA finished the year 22-9 overall and ended the season second in the Pac-10.
